One of my favourite film books is Foster Hirsch's 1981 "THE DARK SIDE OF THE SCREEN: FILM NOIR"; probably the best book on film noir I've read. Seems to me the films mentioned in the book would make a great "film noir" watchlist for many films in the genre as well as those films which influenced the style and feel of film noir.
