A very homely bearded man kind of hippy looking was riding Herbie. Telling the car to be good. I thought I remembered a sequel like this coming about 1975.

Hi, Eugene.
I don't know if anything in the following, from Wikipedia's article about 1968's The Love Bug, might be what you're remembering:
I just now checked, and Herbie Rides Again is from 1974, while Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo is from 1977. I bet one or the other of those two is the one you're remembering. (All other sequels are from subsequent years.)
Does anyone in the cast lists look like the man you recall? This actor looks like he could possibly fit the bill.

It cannot be the 1997 TV Movie starring beauty Ali Wentworth. This memory is distinctly from the 70s. Maybe a similar movie to Herbie? Thanks but the photo of that man does not ring a bell at all!

The above part of my response is specific to the mid 1970s. Perhaps one or the other of those is the movie you recall?

No. It was either a very similar movie or a TV special about Herbie. Nice writing to you.

Sure you weren't smoking some "Herbie" when you thought you saw this?

Even kiddingly I resent that. I do not do drugs. Look the Mandela effect. Everybody grown has it. We all remember things a certain way. Now it is possible there was a special on Herbie. Or a very similar film to it now forgotten. If I recall it right I saw this sometime between the Ken Berry/Stephanie Powers Herbie film and the Jones/ Knotts Herbie sequel.

I'm not sure, but don't think I remember any Herbie "knock-off" type movies by other movie studios - though there may have been. I was a teenager during the '70s, and remember enjoying The Love Bug, and more than likely saw one or two (or all?) of its sequels on The Wonderful World of Disney, but unfortunately can't remember a single thing - except regarding the car - about any Herbie movie at this point in time.

The Mandela Effect concept says that reality itself has changed, that there is one reality where one thing happened and another as you remember it today. It's not about remembering wrongly, a thing that everyone does, but something spookier.
Look you are trying to recall a scene in a movie you saw maybe 40 years ago. Unless you rewatch the Herbie movies from that time frame to make sure. Even then you could have mixed things up.

I have seen the movies recently again. None matched how I remembered this one. The bearded man rested in the pulled back front seat of the car while Herbie drove himself. The bearded man sat up and said to Herbie "You be good". And the guy went back to his nap while the car drove on. That is how I recall this movie. That scene was at the beginning.
I know what the Mandela effect is and this qualifies.
Znex, nice writing to you. See my new posting for another chilling and true Mandela effect.

The more I think about it it just came to me a minute ago. Honest less than two minutes ago. It was probably a car commercial. About VW's.

VW "Bugs" certainly were popular back then.

Yes. BTW I think it was a movie theater ad I saw for VW's and I confused it for the actual film. They do ads for products on occasion on movie theater screens before the feature film starts.
