Amazing that a movie about the internet was made in 1995

Only 13% of Americans had the internet in their homes back then. Not only did this movie have to explain its plot, it had to explain what the internet was. It's funny looking at it now as she had a jet-speed connection in the age of dial up.

I think what strikes me more than that is that it's been more than 25 YEARS since AOL released its first internet products and about twenty three since Netscape released the very first web browser. It's impossible to overstate what a revelation it was as the time. Movies like The Net treated it with awe, as one does with such a new and alien product, so it's not surprising that it's a bit cheesy and inaccurate in retrospect.
But man was Sandra Bullock adorable in that period!

Well I was at school in 95 and we had 1 computer at the library with internet and they wouldn't let anyone use it without the librarians supervision. Not until 98 did they invest in upgrading the library with 6 and everyone could use with parential consent that was marked on their ID card.
So when I saw this movie I didn't really have any strong concept of what the internet was. I remember the first site I put into the internet was www.rick.com, as I used to listen to rick-dees and he always spoke about it.

Two months ago, I saw a provocative movie on cable TV. It was called The Net, with that girl from the bus. I did a little reading, and I realized, it wasn't that farfetched.

Back then internet users were seen as weirdo shut-ins. They didn't look like Sandra Bullock.

man... i remember how slow the internet was at that time... truly exponential growth since then...

I saw this in the theater and have watched it a few times since, most recently about a week ago. I love this movie, its very 90s computer age. This, Matrix and Hackers are the trinity of great PC/hacker movies.

BBS'S were fun at 300 baud in the 80's. Compuserve barely had access to internet back then.
