Discuss One-Eyed Jacks

  1. When Karl Malden's character's deputy yells at his (Malden's) character's step-daughter it all seems uneven. Malden said he loved her like she was his own daughter. Would the deputy not be in some trouble for this?

  2. A documentary talked about how problematic this movie's making was and did something else too. It spilled the beans on Brando that he indeed was a method actor. I heard reports solidly and heavily denying that he was actually any such thing. But when his character was drunk in this film it turns out Brando got sloshed for real just for that scene!

Brando himself rejected the notion of "method acting" in his autobiography, on grounds similar to those that were articulated later by Susan Strasberg..... There's an infinite number of methods which any actor can employ when creating a character

But getting drunk for real so you will act drunk is method. He was supposed to be a great and powerful complete faker. He was method after all--no matter how much he denied it!

Something else I will add in. I think what Brando was attempting to achieve by constantly rewriting this film was unplanned character bits, plot bits, and an uncertain outcome/climax. Let me explain further. Maybe his character-or would his character-- of Kid be killed or survive or go to jail for life at the end of the film? He made almost the entire movie uncertain of the outcome. He played almost the whole film not knowing his character's end fate. Realistic huh? Maybe the confusing bit about the deputy and Brando's leading lady I pointed out above. Perhaps that was not totally scripted or even planned but Brando left it in anyway. He was a great director but it took him far too long to finish a project so truly better he did not direct much again!
