This movie strikes me very much as Oliver Stone trying to reckon with the world, America's place in it and his idealism vs. the nihilism and expediency that he sees among decision makers...
Alexander is just a prisim through which he is taking us along in his journey...
The movie makes a lot iof sense, and works well that was..i dont think it was ever meant to be a historical document...
Do you think Stone's Alexander is just misunderstood?

I am a strong critic of woke movement in cinematography. This movie, as the historian commenter Robin Lane Fox said, was never meant to be a historical document but historical drama. Nevertheless, a surprising amount of things in this movie was historically accurate, including same-sex relationships (but not marriages) which in ancient Greece was common and normal along with polygamy and murdering of noble children in fights for power. It is also historical fact that Alexander married a barbarian woman of no social significance, against Macedonian and Greek traditions. We don't know the color of her skin but due to location she was surely of a different race. Alexander was ahead of his times with the vision of united people living in a united world, a direct opposition to Greek city-states. Most of his visions didn't survive long after his death. I recommend watching the Final Cut made in 2011 with Robin Lane Fox commentary which helps better understand this truly great movie.
