Ok, here is my question: why does he suddenly kill the family? He seems cool with getting on their good side and all, then suddenly snaps a 180 and kills them. I never got that, and that is all that is keeping me from loving the film!

Watching the film again and I finally figured it out, and like the movie all the more for it! According to the black dude from John Wick, David is programmed to close all loose ends. He even says that, at this point, David likely can't stop himself as he likely believes his ID is compromised (and he's right) and his programming has kicked in.

Yes. I don’t think he had any intention of hurting the family until his identity/history was starting to be compromised and his programmming kicked in to clean house on all possible witnesses etc. It could be he was chosen for such a program because his psych profile indicated sociopathy etc. all interesting fodder for backstory. Not a great movie but enjoyable and the cast is good. It is one of those movies that has its own flavor so you remember it. I found this with It Follows as well which has the same actress in the lead IIRC.

But why make the task force look so ridiculous? They seem organized and instead get hit like pins. They shoot the house blindly ... really absurd as a choice. The military arrival part could definitely be better. He made the whole movie ridiculous.

I think it was written to show how scared they might have been of him. And also to look cool probably.
