What exactly was April's job?

All they ever say is how badly April was underacheiving in her professional life. Gladys Knight even told April her mom would have been disappointed. I assumed for half of this movie that she was a stripper or something but they never actually show her at work. Just drinking/drunk after her shift. Did she strip or just sing? If it was only singing what's so bad about that?

I'm pretty sure she was just a singer. She was probably a disappointment because she was singing in some bar, getting drunk every night, living with some man that was married to someone else, being dependent on this man, and not caring about anybody else but herself..
