In the final scene of the film, we see Jackson, now the titular slasher Leatherface, put on a mask, dress it in lipstick, before going nuts. I have seen a lot of reviewers for the film say this scene comes out of nowhere.
I feel like the writers had a cool idea, but implemented it weakly.
My interpretation was that Jackson was either showing some degree of remorce for his actions by trying to bring back the nurse (dressing himself up in a rough female appearance and/or placing her face on his, assuming that wasn't someone else's skin) oooooooorrrrrrr he has had his sense of self so shattered that, like Tobe Hooper's original Leatherface, he needs the mask to take on a persona.
I feel the writers either left it vague deliberately or....failed to make that clear. I would've liked to see Leatherface maybe cradle the detached head of the nurse or demonstrate more clearly his lack of self identity....but I still really liked the movie, so I can't complain really.

I agree with this, I think the entire movie goes on to show that as the trek beginning with his family being monsters while he isn't, being sent to a place full of mentally unstable people, losing all of it. He loses Bud, he loses his face, he wasn't guiltless from the beginning, but was just a child and if put in the right situation maybe he could have not become Leatherface. But he wasn't given that opportunity, a man gunning to kill him only because he was related to the people who killed his daughter. Despite the fact his family were monsters, they were the only people that only really cared about him, encouraging him to give into the rage that has been built because of everything he has lost because of the "normal" people.
He has had a mental breakdown, he has no personality, he can't talk anymore physically cause of his face just being destroyed, his mind gone. Killing the only person who thought he could be something other than a monster, he's now a blank slate. Maybe he is trying to be "normal" by wearing her face.
