Discuss The Swimmer

Do you want to see Burt Lancaster:

  • washing his feet
  • pretending to swim on dry land
  • doing equestrian without a horse
  • doing the 100 yard dash with a horse
  • having a cameo at a nudist colony
  • seemingly recreating the ending of Solaris from a year previous

Then this is the film for you! Lancaster is at his magnetic best, the film is utterly bonkers and somehow surreal without ever straying into being arty-farty. But still, the utter lack of any kind of coherent narrative and the overbearing score means I can only give this 5/10. One of a kind.

Valid points from the OP, but somehow still found The Swimmer very compelling. Surely the narrative could have been more clearer, but watching Lancaster's epic journey through the neighborhood as the Has Been suburban stud, was quite something. Enjoyed the film quite a bit, but think also that none other than Lancester could have pulled it off, and made the film work. I'd give it 7 or even 8 out of 10.

I've still never seen this film but have been looking forward to stumbling across it for many years now.

The sole reason being the "Captain of your own soul" dialogue which was pinched by Saint Etienne and used on one of their compilation CDs.
