Unlike those other posters who seem to be perennially aggrieved, I thought this movie was a light, fun romcom.
But they really screwed up when they tried to "both-sides" the utter depravity of the modern GOP. The reality is so bad that merely an honest recount of the facts will appear hopelessly biased. But that doesn't mean that gas-lighting the audience is the right move.
They should have left that scene on the cutting room floor and just not even broached the subject. Especially the part where they made it out as if being legitimately christian was a republican thing. Nah, the republicans only have a lock on fox-news christians. Its the same cohort that cited the bible to justify anti-miscegenation laws just a few decades ago. The Jesus christians don't want anything to do with that cult of white supremacy, and trying to associate Jesus with the GOP won't attract GOP audiences (witness the aggrieved haters here) but it is an insult to the actually pious.

Totally agree. The film was doing a classic dance to be everything to all people, and in the process failed to be much of anything to anyone.
