Having seen Mud as well, personally I didn't make the connection. I can see it now that you have pointed it out, but Zack Gottsagen's character made this film wonderfully unique.
What a strange film, kind of like a Wes Anderson film but attempting to play it straight. Blending unreality at every turn (including its depiction of life with a mental impairment) with a completely serious performance from Lebouf. The two lead males and the cameo from Dern held my attention but I could only recommend it as a curio with a short run time.

Rather than Mud Lite, I thought it was, in the words of Bugs Bunny, Mud backwards.
