Item: Le Hobbit : Un voyage inattendu
Language: fr
Type of Problem: Incorrect_content
Extra Details: Fiche verrouillée Il faut une majuscule à voyage et pas à "Un". Dans le cas d'un double titre, le premier substantif prend une majuscule comme le premier titre, mais pas l'article. Merci !

I'm not saying you are wrong, but it is really difficult to justify a title change without official press material backing it and I couldn't find any using "Le Hobbit : un Voyage inattendu".

Thanks for replying, I understand. Those French titling conventions are confusing. It takes a real effort to figure them out. And this is a very particular case (second title starting with an undefined article). I'm not even sure anymore. I have found a fan site copying the original press material... which shows Un Voyage Inattendu... all caps (the Anglo/American way, definitely wrong in French). Probably the people who write this material don't really know or care about these conventions. I'd rather have it the way it is now.
It bothers me more for The Empire Strikes Back which has not been corrected yet. L'Empire contre-attaque (upper case on Empire) is a no brainer, all sources are consistent. Is there anything you can do ?
Cheers

Thanks. Turns out I was wrong for this Hobbit, sorry, took me some time to figure out all the rules.
Here is a short summary of the main rules, if you're interested (as per Wikipedia)
First word always gets a capital first letter, as in Une vie
If title is a sentence, only the first word gets a cap, as in L'assassin habite au 21
In "fake sentences", depends if article is defined or undefined as in L'Homme qui rit vs Un homme qui rit
Two nouns opposed symetrically, 2 caps as in Guerre et Paix or Flic ou Voyou
But doesn't work with 2 verbs ! as in Être et avoir
If first word is a defined article, first noun and adjectives before it take a cap too as in Les Misérables or Le Vilain Petit Canard
Several nouns opposed, all nouns with a defined article get a cap (not only the first) as well as the adjectives before them as in Le Loup et l'Agneau
The tricky part was for subtitles and double titles,
Subtitle (separated by "ou") sames rules apply as main title except for the defined article of the second title which stays in lower case, as in Le Barbier de Séville ou la Précaution inutile
but in the case of double titles, both parts are independent: Pirates des Caraïbes : La Malédiction du Black Pearl , Captain America : Le Soldat de l'hiver, Le Hobbit : Un voyage inattendu
As a result, The Unexpected Journey was right and doesn't need a change, however you may want to change:
Le Hobbit : La désolation de Smaug for Le Hobbit : La Désolation de Smaug
and Le Hobbit : La bataille des cinq armées for Le Hobbit : La Bataille des cinq armées
in both cases the first noun should be cap'ed since it has a definite article.
Thanks !!

Thanks! I'm familiar with the fr-fr capitalization rules, but the reminder was welcomed.
Done!

Hi Banana I'm using this thread to ask a question since I haven't figured out how to send direct messages to other users. I'm doing my best to cleanup some fr-fr titles, and I noticed another user is making massive edits for double titles, using a coma instead of colons. Like Captain America, Civil War instead of Captain America: Civil War. I understand some may have personal preferences, however since this is going to impact peoples' movie libraries, it's important to use conventions. Is there any way to have a private or public discussion with a particular user to agree on this with a particular user ? Thanks for your help !

Unfortunately, we do not yet have a direct message system. Thanks for bringing the issue to my attention, I will fix and lock the titles and contact them by email.
