Guy manages time travel using a designer drug, video records himself, shows the recording to his best friend who then responds as if he just showed him his fantasy football team.
Sure, time travel, no big deal.

I'm a bit partial to time travel stories so I liked it more than you did, but it did have a lot of problems. The idea of a time travel drug, as silly as it is, I was fine with. I'm willing to buy into a piece of magic if it's done right. But in order to return to your time you had to be IN THE EXACT SAME PLACE YOU ARRIVED IN?? Obviously they included this rule to increase the danger and so that he has to make the sacrifice at the end, but it was a little too silly for me. It's a drug that affects your brain, it shouldn't tie you to a location.
Also the two times he gets stuck in the past it's tied to racism. Once, okay, sure, that's fair, but that second time could have just as easily been a guy that didn't speak english and saw Mackie's character as a threat. Overall though I enjoyed it for the most part for at least being original and doing a different kind of time travel movie.

The film had a lot of potential, but unfortunately, very badly exploited. The story flows slowly, long and boringly.

I wanted to like it because I also like time travel stories, but I see a lot of lazy writing and forced wokeness in this.

Hey, so am I - on both accounts.
This was one of the best bits IMHO. "direction" of time-jumps being connected to a location makes a lot of sense. With many other phenomena we humans didn't understand at the time, there were connections we couldn't explain but which were reliable - starting from thunder and lightning turning up on the same occasion. And since time is one of the dimension, just like the spatial three we are used to, movement not going orthogonal when you're just dabbling makes sense.
(I have a harder time with the drug thing, but hey; suspension of disbelief.)
Connected to the location and its history (they chose it when writing, so not entirely random).
Same here.

I didn't watch the whole movie as the whole drug thing was a sticking point for me. It implies that your brain has the ability to travel through time and the drug somehow enables it.
But suspending that belief: From what we know about time travel - into the future it's possible at least - you would need coordinates. If your brain is the navigator in this scenario it would make more sense if he traveled within his lifetime. He would know where to go because he would be traveling to memories. Would make for a much better plot too.
