Thelma Ritter, as matter-of-fact tell-it-like-it-is home health aide Stella, is a true joy and delight, giving a thoroughly entertaining - while entirely naturalistic and believable - performance. Miss Ritter is one of my favourite things about this movie.

The whole cast is formidable. Grace, Thelma, Jimmy, Burr... all of them good actors. Even the ones playing bit parts in the apartment building are alright.

@Celluloid, indeed. Excellent casting. As you mentioned, even the people off in the distance inside other apartments or in the courtyard are effective.
@mechajutaro, Thelma had no family connection to actor John Ritter. John's father, however, was singing Western star Tex Ritter.

Yes, I agree. Thelma Ritter contributed a great performance in Rear Window, and aside from that she was indeed a very good character actress. One of those that tends to pop in up in many various movies, causing one to always pause and be like, "Oh, she looks familiar. Now where have I--oh yeah, I know her."

I'm primarily familiar with Miss Ritter from this and Miracle on 34th Street, though recall also seeing her in an episode or two of such first-rate classic series as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, etc. She always gave a reliably excellent performance, and always seemed entirely relatable.
