I'm assuming Warner Bros won't risk an original, new sci-fi film due to the cost vs box office risk ratio and the directors - The Wachowskis - need another hit. It's a safe option to make another, I guess. There's no guarantee it will be a big hit but The Wachowskis last sci-fi film - Jupiter Ascending - bombed so if they have to make another film then Matrix 4 is a safer bet.
Another reason why Warner Bros might have gone ahead with another Matrix film is the success of the John Wick films. This has kept Keanu Reaves popular, a financial asset in the movie biz, so it's very likely all the John Wick fans will go see Matrix 4. I think it will open to huge box office but whether or not it will make any sense or is needed, who knows.
I always thought the big problem with The Matrix Reloaded was that the film would pause for a rapid fire philosophy info-dump, then it would pause for a long action scene and neither of these two elements were blended into the narrative naturally.
Yes it will be a musical featuring the songs and groups of the 90s rave scene. Like Mama Mia goes to Ibiza. But with slo mo Kung Fu and lots of bullets. And philosophy. Lots of that.
I just don't see where they can go with it. I like Keanu and Carrie-Ann Moss, but the sequels over-explained the entire Matrix concept. The first movie was AMAZING and took everyone by surprise. Walking in cold I had no idea what to expect. Then, the Wachowskis decided it was necessary to explain the entire Matrix concept. In nauseating detail. And they had to give us an orgy in Zion. Jesus.
As much as I wanted a sequel at the time, I wish they'd just left it at one movie. With Matrix 4 I think Lana never heard the phrase, "When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging."
I thought it seemed a planned trilogy from the start. Or at least one after the success of the first movie. No there is no need for another. The Matrix is so 90s I can't imagine it would work today.

They were indeed awful. I don't have any expectations for this new one, definitely won't bother seeing it until it's free somewhere.
First movie is amazing though.

That's so weird. I take the blue pill and I get an erection. I guess it works differently for some people.
