Discuss Iron Man 3

There's another thread on here where I say that this is the best Iron Man film. It still is!

Random thoughts;

Loved The Mandarin twist.

Having a hero get help from a kid in a movie is usually something to worry about, especially if it's a Disney film. But this is a Shane Black film and it turns out there's nothing to worry about at all! Great relationship between the two characters.

Happy Hogan's mullet! 👹

This is pretty much a standalone movie so those unnatural creatures that hate it can skip over it and miss none of the bigger MCU picture.

I still hate Eiffel 65.

I have seen that quote by him before....

There have been more overt forms of toilet humor, to be sure. Whatever their intentions though, the moronism we hear of KRS-1 and so many other rappers, the minute they start trying to sound smart, places their yammering firmly in this category of comedy

I won't be clicking that link, and I won't pass judgement on Kris or your quote of him either. I will simply offer up that years ago, while at university, I had the honor and pleasure of interviewing the man by telephone for a piece that I wrote. And he came off, as he does in virtually all of his music, as a very intelligent person.

The link is nothing less than hilarious , 'Loid. Ergo I encourage you to click on it, and start your day off on a bright note.

Hmmm.

Never having met KRS personally, I won't pass judgment on him morally; no doubt, he's got his redeeming qualities, just as most of us do.

Exactly. Personally, I will listen to anyone for some helpful information or insights, even the former president of the U.S. of A.

I suppose it's possible that the interviewer caught him on a weird day, when he made those comments about 9/11

Right, like with me, I have 3 types of posts here: There are rushed ones, then there are posts that just come together right on the spot, and then there are the posts that I go back to and edit repeatedly. You know, people who claim to be perfect tend to come off a bit dubious to me, really.

Returning to the thread's original topic, am I the only one who found about 95% of the action in this film to be flat-out boring? This was ironic, given that the director is none other than Shane Black.

I found the action to be very entertaining. More so than the previous two installments. A big part of that was because we saw Stark fight the bad guys without his armour. Or with only bits of his armour. Not only did it look cooler but it meant he had to use his wits more. It also makes the action more involving if you can see the heroes face. The bit at the end of the first Spiderman film when he fights The Green Goblin being a good example.

The action scenes also just seemed to have more imagination and more of a narrative running through them. The bit where he saves all the people falling from the plane. It shows a hero actually using his wits to save people and get them to cooperate. Then you get a twist when he's hit by a truck and you realise he's not even in the suit. This comes from writing an action scene rather than just writing noise and it's exactly the kind of thing I expect from Black. It's what he's good at.

The part with the people falling from the plane is my fave action part of the film, actually. As for the other scenes, to each their own, I think.

I actually found the action in Iron Man 2 to be the worst in the trilogy — like something from an old school video game!

Yeah, I think I'm with you there. I think the action in the first 2 are pretty similar but the first one has him fighting in that rusty makeshift suit. I thought that was cool and looked more physical and less CGI. Probably my fave Iron Man suit.

I'll always dig watching Stark take out those terrorists in the improved, red and gold armor, even if he does vastly overpower them. That part of that scene where he lands on the ground on one knee, and commences to kickin' some ass feels so much like one of my Iron Man books come to life, it's amazing. So, that's partly why I give credit to the first movie's action. I wouldn't describe it as "noise" at all.

It's the second film's fight scenes that had me ready to yawn whenever I saw it. Except for Whiplash's sneak attack on the race track. That was cool.

Well, when I use the term "noise" I wouldn't say I see the first two Iron Man films as anywhere near the worst offenders of that. It's more that I just found their action to be pretty sparse, lacking distinction and over too quickly. I just couldn't feel the intensity getting ratcheted up because these scenes would just be about 30 seconds long.

When I said "noise" I was generally referring to a lot of action we tend to get from many other films where it's just relentless CGI being thrown at the screen charmlessly and nothing really happening. Though yes, I do think the action scenes in the first two didn't have that kind of narrative interwoven into them that Black does in 3.

Word! Also, if you ask me, maybe none of today's action stars have the distinction that the ones I grew up watching in films had. Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Snipes, now they were interesting. (Hey, I just accidentally did some alliteration there!)

We're conflating eras there, 'Loid. Snipes was very much at the peak of his stardom throughout the 90s. Stallone and Arnie really enjoyed their heyday in the 80s/the first couple of years of the 90s

Yea, I may come off sounding like a fogey with my comment basically adding up to, "Action stars were a lot better back in my time...."

I might have touched on this before, but I feel like Statham, The Rock (the most distinctive of all the contemporary action heroes right now, IMO), etc. are very much products of this era we are in now. Whereas without a doubt, Arnie and Stallone were resultant of the political conservatism of the 80s.

I don't know what The Rock, Statham, etc. represent though, to be honest.
