Each has a micro-moment where they stare at Jack and Wendy, respectively, in which they can see all is not well beneath the smiles. Genius move by Kubrick to warn us that these people are in denial about something dark within, and that their long, lonely stay at the Overlook will call it forth...

I absolutely agree, it is very apparent that this movie is darker than the lightness that can be found in the novel. (The Shining 1977) Great observation!
