Gearing up for a 2nd watch of this classic, it suddenly occurred to me that this might be the only film that shows zombies in a sympathetic light?
Vampires of course, there have been many vampire protagonists, from Anne Rice's stories to Twilight to the Underworld franchise. We've had ghost protagonists like in Ghost. And we've even had a bunch of serial killer protagonists as in Dexter and Lucky and Hannibal. But no one touches zombies?
I think that's another thing that makes this such a great film. Our zombie Catherine, despite feasting on human flesh, is clearly the good character while her friend, the human Hélène, is the one who's corrupted and evil. It takes us a while to see it, but it's clearly Rollin's intent to show this moral switcheroo. I think he pulls it off brilliantly. And the memorable final scene (which I won't spoil) leaves us with a real conflict of emotions.

Possibly the first, but definitely not the only. You've forgotten zom-rom-com "Warm Bodies". Admittedly, it is quite forgettable.
Not seen it, but there is also: https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/27231-colin
Plus this one that I remember enjoying at the time: https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/40095-dead-heat

I stand corrected! I hadn't heard of those, except Dead Heat which I never knew the plot of. And yes absolutely, zomromcoms count lol
That actually reminds me of a super low basement budget zomromcom My Dead Girlfriend which, low budget aside, isn't bad at all. I might have to check out Warm Bodies just because it has freakin JOHN MALKOVICH in it. Wow

Having made the mistake of watching One Ranger , I'm not sure that's a seal of quality these days.

How about I Walked with a Zombie (1943)? I consider it zombie sympathetic. In its case, a woman is zombielike due to a voodoo curse.

Never heard of it, but it's officially on my watch list! I see it was recently released by Criterion in 4K so I've got my ebay alarms set to notify me if a used copy comes up.
The trailer shows her as something much like the Living Dead Girl, creepy but elegant. Same long white flowing gown. I wonder if Jean Rollin might've been inspired by IWwaZ as he was by many early American horror flicks.
