I've never been a big fan of science fiction movies, and I find the Star Wars saga particularly boring, except perhaps the trilogy, and that's mostly due to the era they were released in and the charisma of actors like Harrison Ford. Although Rebel Moon is clearly inspired by Star Wars (no secret), it brings a breath of fresh air to the overwhelming abundance of franchises, sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. It's true that the first story feels short, and lacks a lot of context, but we can't judge the entirety of a work by its first part, just as we wouldn't with Kill Bill, The Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars itself.
Personally, I think it has everything needed to introduce a new universe with completely unknown characters, and the action is adequate without being overbearing, all within a compact 2-hour package.
I believe it deserves a chance, and I personally am eager to see the second part. We will see, based on its outcome, if the whole of the two movies is worth it.

You have to see the director's cut. And also the Part II director's cut.
