This was a horrible follow up to Mission Impossible (1996). While the first movie's plot was a bit too complicated (not to mention the plot twist that Jim Phelps turns out to be the bad guy), it was an entertaining film that didn't talk down to the audience.
Not so with this movie. The plot was confusing, the talented Ving Rhames and Thandie Newton were wasted, Dougray Scott was a so-so villian, and John Woo proved that just because a director can do a good job with an action movie, it doesn't mean he can direct a Mission Impossible movie.

My fellow posters on the Classic Mission Impossible board are a good bunch, but if they ever found out that I liked ANY of the MI movies, they would disavow me!

A lot of the hate the Classic Mission Impossible fans have for the MI movies is because the bad guy turned out to be Jim Phelps. The first generation who watched the show on tv (myself included) LOVED Jim Phelps. To us he was such a honest and upstanding man. To be honest, we gave him demigod status.
So, when the first movie came out they felt betrayed. Now I didn't like Phelps being the bad guy, but I have to admit that it was a hell of a plot twist.
BTW, I read that MI6 shooting was put on hold because Tom Cruise broke his ankle during filming. Also, I didn't see Jeremy Renner's name in the MDb page for MI6.

Mission Impossible 2 is absolutely awful. What a ridiculous movie.
It almost killed this series for me.

The motorbike scene was awful as well.

I rewatched it last night. Really enjoyed it. Yes, Tom's floppy hair is strange (but looks great flipping around in stunts). I like the globe trotting during the first half. The Spanish music used throughout was a nice touch. I get that it's barely part of the franchise. I kind of wish they brought back Hopkins and Newton in the future movies in some way.
