Discuss Yul Brynner

Yul Brynner (born Yuliy Borisovich Briner), 1920-1985, was a big star of yesteryear who definitely deserves to have some comments and discussion here.

What are your favourites of his roles? The King and I is of course probably a given.

"The King and I", my favorite. slight_smile

I loved him as Chris, in The Magnificent Seven. Another great movie that didn't need a re-boot.

I had the privilege of attending one of his Ford Theatre (where Lincoln was assassinated, in Washington, DC) performances of The King and I during the revival of it, roughly two years before Mr. Brynner died. His wife at the time was in the central cast, portraying Tuptim. Anyone who's ever attended a performance of anything at Ford Theatre (which I've been to thrice, the first time for I believe solely just a tour, second time for TK&I, third time, later, for the hilarious very Catholic Nunsense) knows that it's a quite smallish place. So I felt like I was physically pretty close to Mr. Brynner during his performance, which was neat.

He continued to have the presence and the stature of his performance in the classic film. I was definitely impressed by him.

What a wonderful experience that must have been seeing a live performance. slight_smile

It's been years since I last watched my DVD of that movie. Definitely need to get it out and give it a new viewing one day or week soon!
