Robert Jr. seems very likable in his television roles even when portraying a somewhat troubled character. He handles his material well, and seems to hide his motivation from his audience until just the right moment. (He's also a son of classic actress Jennifer Jones.)
He certainly strongly favoured his father (though doesn't seem to have resembled his mother any at all). I don't think I've ever seen him in anything, that I remembered him from afterwards, besides a special feature interview on the Strangers on a Train DVD; he came off seeming like a very nice and thoughtful person in that.

Very sad to hear.

My sympathies.
