He did a lot of TV movies/mini-series where he seemed to be the lead I'm not a fan of westerns (besides Tombstone), so I haven't seen any of those films/TV shows. But here are some I liked him in:

Mask (1985)

Tombstone (1993) Besides Kilmer he was the best part of the movie

Roadhouse (1989)

Prancer (1989) A nice family movie

I have only seen Mask of the films which you list. Not sure how I have never seen Tombstone -- a film which has been talked up to me for many years! I really need to get around to it.

My wife has been in love with him for the 37 years we have been together.

I'm not sure about actual staring roles...the only one I can remember is the recent movie, The Hero, which I liked better then I thought I would.

But my favorite movies where I believe he was the scene stealer are:

1. We Were Soldiers
2. Gettysburg
3. Tombstone
4. The Big Lebowski
5. Roadhouse

I also loved him in season 6 of Justified.

That's the first one I think of when you say S Elliott.

Sorry to say I was not all that impressed... it felt awfully derivative of any number of westerns while also very much 'of its time' with the cheesy dialogue/bromantic moments/slo-mo horseback riding etc. I have never really cared for Kurt Russell and only ever enjoy Val Kilmer in comic roles, which didn't help. The number of notable character actors who popped up was impressive and the shootouts were well staged, but not one to remember for me. Sam was good and it nobody wears a gigantic moustache better (certainly not Kurt Russell!).

They both have a large selection of movies, TV shows, documentaries, etc., although I like Hoopla a little better. Both services let you 'borrow' 10 titles every month. I do not know if the selections are different for different areas of the country.

Well, I can't speak to whether or not it was 'derivative' of other westerns because I am not a fan of westerns in general. It is the only one I have seen that I liked. I agree about Russell (I can't get out of my head his time in Disney films), I thought along with Delaney & Paxton they are the weakest parts of the film. But, I think it was Kilmer that made the movie for me. But if we all liked the same things, life would be pretty boring.

Agree with all of these points!

Bill Paxton was a good actor within his narrow range, but in the wrong role he could be pretty hard to take IMO.

Delaney's plot (and that with Wyatt Earp's junkie ex) seemed tagged on and padded out the already excessive running time. I honestly cringed at the final scene.

Westerns are not my favourite genre either by a long shot and I don't watch a new one all that often. There are those that I love, though.

Haha... sadly I am in Singapore, where I am pretty much restricted to my local library (which does have an extensive catalogue), Netflix and whatever I can dig up online!

There do seem to be copies of Lifeguard online so I shall check it out soon.

I always view the subjective love of one movie over another as the reason why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors. But if you like Lifeguard over Tombstone, we are definitely eating two different flavors of ice cream
