Koreeda is one of my favourite contemporary filmmakers and I am delighted to see that he has finally been awarded the Palme d'Or. Looking forward to catching Shoplifters - I hope it is given a cinema release in my part of the world.

I haven't seen the movie he won Cannes for, but I agree he's a great filmmaker. I loved "After Life", a really original story shown in an artistic way without being self-indulgent. Japanese filmmakers like Koreeda generally have a different approach to cinema that I like: thoughtful & slow rather than visceral & choppy.
One reservation I have though, is that I generally don't like the films that win the Palme d'Or, even though I like the winning director's other works. In fact I can't name a single Palme d'Or winning film that I really liked. So I might skip Shoplifters and instead watch his film The Third Murder, which won the Japanese Academy award this year.

After Life is a very good one. Nobody Knows and Like Father, Like Son are my favourites.
Palme winners can go either way for me, but I do find their choices are, for the most part, at least interesting and occasionally outstanding . Looking at the past few years I'd list Amour, Blue is the Warmest Colour and Winter Sleep as easily among my favourites of their respective years. I, Daniel Blake is excellent, too. I have high hopes for Shoplifters.

In a way, I still like "Pulp Fiction."
