I never heard of his books, but I remember when he released the trailer it blew me away. Unfortunately Universal used the hype to go for an entirely new remake, which I ended up really liking, but it buried Hatch's decades of campaigning for an original character reunion.

His role of Zarek on the remake was fantastic though, one of the best "villains" in scifi because he's not a villian, just someone with different principles than the norm. Hatch played it perfectly. I hope that role gave him some satisfaction even though it wasn't Apollo.
