It's incredible the amount of power and influence that Hedda Hopper managed to gain, and to self-righteously wield, in Hollywood. When she personally had it in for someone, or anything "on" someone, she'd apparently not think twice about working her dirty brand of magic on and/or against them. And it wasn't like she was some exceptional great lady. Instead, she was just an awful, vicious woman of unremarkable background, and no big deal (though not bad) as an actress, who happened to successfully find her niche in intimidating people, otherwise blithely destroying them. She apparently couldn't care less the careers (and perhaps lives) that she wrecked.
For sure "Hopper" was the ideal last name for her. (In the event anyone reading this isn't familiar with American terminology, "hopper" is a longstanding slang term for toilet.)

Oh never heard that slang term for the wonderful name of Hopper, many of whom actually make for decent citizens in regular countries.
But yes, how sad that Hedda continuously acts unabashedly in making or breaking Hollywood careers. She probably stared out as an actress herself, and then started the columns, and then fashioned herself as the hat collector, and then played herself in films and on television instead of being cast in any sympathetic role.
I mean, wouldn't most decent individuals feel really embarrassed to have the public to read their tabloid trash? But yet, those big three--as in Hedda Hopper, Luella O Parson, Walter Winchell, could make or break careers and not lose a minute of relaxation. Bully, bully, bully.
When you see interviews about what the stars said that they thought about those three, some may have liked one and not another, but really without very much respect especially because they were caught up in scandals of their own making, not the least of which may have been acts of corruption, bribery or blackmail.
On top of that, they were said to have bias against one gender or the other. Luella was said to go easy on the actresses but go hard on the actors, while Hedda was said to go easy on the actors but go hard on the actresses, while Walter was said to grow increasingly hard on everybody.
But then once in a while, you'd hear an interview compliment or two about those Tinseltown gossip mongers. Mamie V once said that she got along with Hedda but not at all with Luella. Ginger R has said that Hedda gave her a break from lashings because her mother, Lela R, was offered the column job before Hedda, but Lela turned it down so that she could tutor. Walter was said to have invented the artificial corrolatory system or something like that.
But what they would sow, they would often reap, and that's why we hear complaints about their rumor spreading to this day, and sometimes their hats or hairpieces. What does HH wear? What does LP wear? What does WW implant into the systems of the unsuspecting?
So not to speak ill of the departed, but I would feel really embarrassed if people would be reading anything I'd have to say about others because, as we all know, this is not too terribly nice and polite, right?
