The Movie Database Support

As I have reported at the old forum before, there are many cases that the same movie would have different translations in different territory, even if these territories are using the same language. And even for people using the same language (e.g. Chinese), the characters could be totally different. (e.g. simplified Chinese, tranditional Chinese)

For example, the same movie often has different names in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. In this case, someone here kindly suggested that people could just use alternative_titles (which depends on iso_3166_1), but this is just a workaround for title. How about cast? overview? crew? These fields all have different values/translations.

Plus, the 'use alternative titles' method is merely a convention, which is no where to be found thoughout the whole site, especially with the old forum gone. It's very easy for a new comer to step on other people's toes. For example, someone from Taiwan might change a title from simplified Chinese to traditional Chinese, then the annoyed original user would change it back to simplified Chinese, then this goes on.

Another (probably) related issue is, the current language checking mechnism for language 'Chinese' seems only speak 'Simpified Chinese' and will reject content in 'Tranditional Chinese'. Well, Taiwan might be a small place, but people there indeed make movies as well, and their creations won prizes in international film festival from time to time. Imagine what it feels like to not be able to write overview and the name of the crew and cast in your own language, when you want to add a movie produced by your own country. I've reported this issue as well at the old forum, but got no further reply. Now I would like to bring this up again, and hope this time someone would really notice this.

TMDB is a great idea for all of us who love movies. I hope it gets better by listening to voices from different place of the world. I'm a competent software developer, and if there's anything I can do to help, please kindly let me know.

Hey John,

Yes, it should.

5 years ago when I created the first version of the database there was a number of factors that I didn't take into account and we're still paying the price. Over time, these things are being addressed with major re-factors but as can imagine, they're never trivial when you have such a popular app.

There's a number of these types of re-factors that I plan on doing but there's some business logic preventing them from happening in the near of future. It will be a great day when TMDb supports true i18n, but until then we can only rely on ISO-639-1.
