Hello everyone,
It's finally time to take a look at the genres we use and make some tweaks. This post might get a little lengthy but I'll try to cover what I know right now.
First, here's a list of the movie genres on TMDb:
TMDb
And if we wanted to compare this list to some other sources online...
Rotten Tomatoes
IMDb
Amazon
Onbviously, one of the things you might notice is that there are actually other genres in use on TMDb, but are not located in the above list. This is part of what we need to look at.
My initial proposal for TMDb's new set of genres is going to be the following:
Do you guys have anything else you think deserves to be on this list?
Can't find a movie or TV show? Login to create it.
Want to rate or add this item to a list?

This thread seems to be quite hard to follow.
Here is my case for adding the "Short" genre, look at one example from IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036618/ -- I doubt it can be mapped to anything else and personally I don't like having movies without any genre, as it breaks sorting by folders.

Hi,
so is "Action & Adventure" (e.g. http://www.themoviedb.org/tv/32754 ) considered to be an error with respect to the new scheme which would need to be expanded into "Action" and "Adventure"?
Same for "Sci-Fi & Fantasy" (e.g. http://www.themoviedb.org/tv/39913).
Cheers. Holger

The Genres in german need some improvement, there are german and english mixed that's not so good for "Liebesfilm" there is the english "Lovestory" , "foreign" and "Holiday" isn't used in Germany , and some are definitely missed as "Heimatfilm" "Filmbiografie" "Italowestern" "Melodram" "Revuefilm" and "Schlagerfilm"

After checking ALL of the listings in this discussion and in spite of the GLBT classification being in both Rotten Tomatoes & Amazon (and, in actuality, it is also in the IMDb) I couldn't believe there was no mention of this category. It really seems quite strange that in spite of the massive money the GLBT community spends on film and having such a strong, loyal fan base - NO ONE even mentioned this. It's lack of inclusion is not disturbing. The fact that it was never mentioned blows my mind! That "Action, Adventure, Thriller, & Mystery" couldn't all be considered Thriller and not have a Gay Interest or GLBT seems really lacking, bordering on homophobic. ANYONE who is GLBT always want to know if there is any related content. This designation is far more important than any consideration of "short". Have I overlooked some type of policy or something?

Huh what? How is GLBT (isn't it LBGT anyways) comparable to say "Action" as a genre? It can be a theme yes but it says nothing about the movie itself... You said yourself that it is about looking for "related content"... there are keywords for that. I wouldn't be surprised if most SJW's were more offended if the drama about the gay person was treated as a whole new genre.
As for the genre list: I still miss the "short" but could gladly pass on "war".
Would also be great if genres were finally fixed and browseable for TV shows.

To sp1ti's point, plot keywords are the proper solution to something like this. Genre's are higher level than this and I don't think labeling something as LGBT really tells you anything about the movie as a whole. It is however a perfect plot keyword. You can see some already using this here.
Yes, it would. It's on the list, I just have 100 other things on that list too :D

Hey Travis, wanted to emphasize that I have proposed to include two new genres to the list; Sport = Deporte and Music = Música.
Good luck, ;-)

I would like to see the genre "sport" be added. The IMDB recognizes this genre for movies with a sports theme. There are numerous movies with a sports theme that get lumped in with the "comedy" or "drama" or "history" genres.

Oh, what an interesting thread. Useful. I'm bumping it for now, may add something later.

Hi,
I am about 4 years late to the discussion but IMDB has 4,952 titles in the Genre: Biography & 2,934 titles in the Genre: Sport.
So Biography & Sport should definitely be in there.
eg. I recently looked up Jackie & The Program via TMDB, and both are listed as DRAMA, but actually should also be in BIOGRAPHY.
Possible to revisit this list?
Regards, KorteX

Hello,
I agree with kortex.gentoo. TMDB should include Biography and Sport as genres.
Good luck, :-)
