Hello everyone,
It's finally time to take a look at the genres we use and make some tweaks. This post might get a little lengthy but I'll try to cover what I know right now.
First, here's a list of the movie genres on TMDb:
TMDb
And if we wanted to compare this list to some other sources online...
Rotten Tomatoes
IMDb
Amazon
Onbviously, one of the things you might notice is that there are actually other genres in use on TMDb, but are not located in the above list. This is part of what we need to look at.
My initial proposal for TMDb's new set of genres is going to be the following:
Do you guys have anything else you think deserves to be on this list?
Can't find a movie or TV show? Login to create it.
Want to rate or add this item to a list?
Not a member?

Well, I'm tired of having to sign in every couple of weeks. And I think the new aqua color scheme is weak. (Although blue, in general, is the most popular color for websites, how many websites have you seen w/an aqua color scheme? I mean, seriously....) And I miss a PM feature for communication w/my friends here. And a few dozen other things, most of which I've mentioned in the past three years, but only a few of which have been improved.
I'm not going to waste my time listing all the issues I have w/this site. If it ever gets to the point where it's easy to scroll through my collected posts, then you will see. (Currently I can only insert a username into the "Search the Forums" box and get a random list of about 20 posts in no particular order.) A lot of it involves things that IMDb did right when they still had forums, and that they continue to do in a superior fashion.
I currently use TMDb only for forums, IMDb for information, because the information landscape here is still woefully relatively barren (and seemingly skewed to favor more recent popular films & TV shows, which says something about its user base, I guess), and I don't have the time or interest to put content here.
I just hope that whoever swallows up the companies that have swallowed up TiVo (that swallowed up this site) won't screw TMDb up. A lot of people have worked tirelessly here, especially Travis, and I hope no one messes it up.

Yes, that's a really bad oversight, and that is just one of many reasons why I still rely on IMDb for the sheer amount and accuracy of its content. Unpaid amateurs may mean well, but they are no match for an army of paid staff. From the Wikipedia article on IMDb: "Due to the time required for processing submitted data or text before it is displayed, IMDb is different from user-contributed projects like Discogs, or OpenStreetMap, or Wikipedia, in that contributors cannot add, delete, or modify the data or text on impulse, and the manipulation of data is controlled by IMDb technology and salaried staff."

Maybe I've missed something here, but is there any sort of dictionary on the site that defines some of the key terms used here, such as what a "genre" is? If we can't even get clear on the definition of terms, we'll just go around and around arguing about things. I believe it was PT100 who said that "musical" perhaps makes more sense as a genre than "music" does; and that we run the risk of trying to call something a genre when it is really just a subject area. I happen to agree with that sentiment. E.g., if we call "music" a genre, then shouldn't we also call "art" or "literature" or "mathematics" or any number of other disciplines "genres?"
And how specific are we going to get with "genres?" Are we going to say that "biker/motorcycle" movies are a genre, or are they just part of the "action" genre? Has anyone determined what level of generality constitutes a genre? Or has the site merely set an upper limit for a manageable number of genres to have, and then picked the broad categories to represent that finite number of genres?
I realize there will always be disagreement about what a genre is, but I wish we could come up with a manageable number of broad categorizations and stick to it.

So this is why we dug up this old thread? Owner made a decision. allowed our input and moved on. This is so old it goes to my dead profile! Not that biggie anyway, just add it as a keyword! A dictionary?

So, basically, the "dictionary" or "Bible" doesn't really help much. And there's some vague punting of the ball: borrowing genres from multiple other websites, bla, bla, bla . . . .
I guess I should have known what a morass the issue is.

Hello. I am currently updating a lot of the fitness videos (and there are a lot!). Per the current regulations, they must be entered as movies but marked as videos. However, I want to assign a genre but it is not in there right now. Sport does not really capture it because while many of these videos aspire to make regular folks more athletic and/or move more like an athlete - these videos are different than a film about Tom Brady. So I'd like to see "Sport & Fitness" added. Or, if we just keep "Sport", have a separate category for "Fitness".

Update: I wanted to re-read this whole thread but I see it is 100 posts long. As I've done some editing and cleanup, I noticed that there really is no appropriate genre for fitness videos. In a number of cases someone categorized them as documentary - which I removed, because none of these are actual documentaries. I have been comparing how things show up in Plex, Emby, Kodi etc and I notice in a number of cases the Genre is listed as "Health & Fitness". This seems like the most appropriate - if in the end themoviedb wants to have a more comprehensive list of genres. However if the goal is to reduce or consolidate categories, the perhaps something like "Sports & Fitness" would be the best, or maybe even "Sports, Health, & Fitness." It depends what you want to do. However, it is really frustrating that there is no current genre they can be assigned to.

FWIW, science fiction and fantasy should definitely be kept apart. As Rod Serling, a master of both genres, once pointed out, “Fantasy is the impossible made probable. Science Fiction is the improbable made possible.”

I would suggest here that only live sports broadcasts should qualify for the Sports genre as they are unscripted competitive events, whereas movies about a sport or containing sport is scripted thus being qualifying as Action, Documentary or Biography genre's.

i found this topic and my suggestion for another genre is anime, because here distinctions to animation, the classic cartoon and the new CGI and the general drawing style play a role

Hi, I came across this thread and just wanted to echo one of the previous comments saying that having some sort of "Experimental/Avant-garde" designation would be a good one to consider if you ever look at the genres again.

"Sci-Fi & Fantasy" in the episode genre does not have Chinese translation. According to the translation in the film category, Sci-Fi & Fantasy should be translated into “科幻和幻想”, but there is no Chinese translation, how can I add Chinese translation?

I don't know the long history of discussion here on this point, but I feel like "Sci-Fi" and "Fantasy" should be split.
I also wonder if "Historical" could be added.
The Expanse is very different in feel and appeal to something like The Wheel of Time.

I still find it crazy that there's no Musical genre. Has there been a good reason given why this hasn't been implemented?
