Julian Norton receives an emergency call from alpaca breeder Jackie, whose prize-winning female Cinderella is pregnant and struggling with a difficult labour. Back at the practice, Peter Wright is dealing with Larry the chinchilla, who is responsible for a population explosion and needs to be castrated, while Dougie the petulant parrot is due for a beak and nail trim.

Julian receives a late-night emergency call to help a cow give birth, but the delivery is more complicated than expected, with the mother and calf's lives hanging in the balance. Alfie the blind labrador is brought to Skeldale following an unusual baking incident, having swallowed a spatula while trying to steal some food.

Julian is called to a heifer in agony with an object embedded in her painful, swollen and infected foot, while Peter removes a huge lump from Holly the golden retriever's head. Meanwhile, two of Skeldale's favourite clients, farmers Steve and Jeanie, are concerned about their cat Spitfire, who has not been his usual feisty self.

Julian faces the difficult task of castrating a group of alpacas, whose owner Colin has been using his own holistic techniques to soothe the animals. Peter tends to a Yorkshire terrier belonging to a regular visitor to the surgery, and the team treats a stray cat with a broken leg.
