Katy Holstrum, arrives at the home of Congressman Glen Morley. She wants to go to the Congo, but Glen asks her to be governess to his sons. When son Steven writes a speech in school on a controversial topic, Glen's career is in turmoil.

Glen is asked to speak about Christopher Columbus at the behest of a sexy Italian actress. However Katy and papa sabotage the event by saying Leif Ericson discovered America.

Glen's anthropologist brother returns home for a visit. He asks Glen to get him a government sponsored assignment in Africa. However, after meeting Katy, the younger Morley doesn't want to leave.

Steve has been acting strange lately. The women are convinced it's puppy love. Turns out it is, except Steve is in love with Katy. When Danny and his friends tease Steve, he leaves home in embarrassment.

Steve puts his reputation and Glen's in jeopardy when Steve does a school report on free love. Katy was reading a book on the subject. Soon the story is all over Washington.

A young friend of the Morley's stays over and teaches Steve about running a business. Steve takes in the payments and doesn't do the jobs. When his friend runs off with the funds, Steve is left holding the bag.

Glen is falling in love with a Washington socialite and it looks serious. She dislikes children and Katy must find a way for Glen to see the woman's true intentions.

Katy and Glen are a bundle of nerves as they're left alone in the house for the weekend. A romantic dinner at home turns into a nightmare causing a big fight. Thankfully two friends help bring Katy and Glen together again.

The Morley's host a young man who's supposed to be a super athlete. Turns out it's all a hoax, the boy is a weakling who's a better student than he is a sports figure.

Steven decides to go steady with Nancy Beth and she immediately starts planning their wedding and future. A nervous Steven wants to break things off, and when he does, Nancy Beth develops a crush on Glen.

Katy has her horoscope read when dining with Glen. The teller says Katy and Glen are headed for disaster. The two start fighting and when they make up, Glen tries to propose but it gets foiled. The two still find a way to patch things up.

Katy feels she's not needed much around the Morley house. She decides to get a job at night at a bookstore. The job is just okay but Glen thinks Katy is trying to spite him, making her more determined not to quit.

Katy is still feeling like she needs to spend less time at the Morley house. A friend convinces Katy to move out and she does. However, she and Glen end up spending more time together than they did when she lived with the family.

Glen's childhood friend, paranoid, and hypochondriac Tony Parrish comes to visit. He's very rich and eccentric. Katy hopes to ask him for a donation to the orphanage she works at and Tony thinks it's a marriage ploy.

Glen is getting some extra attention from a British mystery writer, spurring jealousy in Katy. One night she reads one of the stories and dreams Morleys live in England and are involved in a mysterious crime, with Katy as the suspect.

As Katy volunteers at the orphanage she becomes close to a little girl who always seems to get picked over for adoption. When a young couple show interest, Katy must help both the couple and little girl find a way to each other.

While visiting a park Katy tells off a rich snob. The man is so infatuated with Katy's frankness that he asks her to become his personal assistant. Both Katy and Glen are forced to re-examine their feelings for each other.

Some of the members of The Washington Women's Club are not too pleased with their president. So, the women nominate Katy to run for president, causing Glen to feel neglected.

Glen has an idea to promote affordable childcare and Katy has a suggestion: she knows of some elderly women who would be perfect as daycare workers. However, the press gets wind and thinks Katy gives Glen all his ideas.

Katy is the recipient of a citizenship award and a fellow Minnesotan is in town to present it. Meanwhile, Katy brings home a friend, a Russian diplomat. Katy is soon branded Un-American.

Katy's rich Uncle leaves her a castle in his will. An attorney suggests turning the castle into a hotel. Glen says Katy has no idea how to do this which only pushes her further with the idea. This means she will have to leave the Morleys.

Katy's new friend in the government is also the eyes and ears of Washington. Katy starts to brag about Glen and his success causing Katy's friend to think he's being promoted to a higher position. Soon the rumor mill goes into overtime.

The time has come for Glen to propose. He plans a wonderful evening, but Katy ends up hosting Danny's scout troop. The two spend the whole night trying to find time for each other.

Glen and Katy decide to visit the farm so that Glen can properly as for Katy's hand in marriage. However, Papa says Nej because he thinks Glen's career is not stable. The family finds a way to convince Papa otherwise.

Katy's friends are planning a bridal shower and it's up to Glen to keep Katy out until the right time. Katy is hoping to see a special concert and gets tickets. Now Glen has a problem trying to get Katy back to her own party.

Katy and Glen are feeling that they may not be able to wait until November to get married. They decide to elope however the plan is fraught with interruptions and both agree it's worth the wait.

Glen and Katy would like a Washington wedding but Papa Holstrum wants a Minnesota wedding. Neither party want to hurt the other's feelings.

Katy and Glen decide to go camping with Senator Ames and his wife. Glen is not too thrilled, but Katy thinks it would be a lot of fun. Turns out Senator Ames and his wife bow out leaving Glen and Katy alone.

Eccentric Tony Parrish returns to give Glen a Stag Party against Glen's wishes. Katy is unsure and Tony thinks she's harboring some insecurities about Glen's fidelity.

Glen and Katy each get advice about their future, causing both to daydream what marriage will be like. This leads to Glen's cold feet and the couple breaking their engagement.

Katy and Glen get a gift from Senator Allen, a garish statue on their front lawn. The couple doesn't want to be ungrateful and give it back, so they find a group of admirers and donate it.

Once again, Senator Ames is giving Glen cold feet by predicting what life will be like when Katy tries to redecorate the bedroom. It all comes true causing an argument between the couple, until Steven and Danny come to the rescue.

The happy day is here, Katy and Glen's wedding day. However, Papa is getting nervous and Glen loses his best man and must find a replacement.

Glen and Katy can't wait to start their honeymoon but when they arrive they're given the wrong room with two separate beds.

Katy and Glen are enjoying the rest of their honeymoon in New York City however they're bombarded by a party next door. The host is a pop star who's hiding out from his fans.

Katy is nominated by her women's group to oversee the annual fashion show. Katy wants to do something really different and hires an Avant Garde designer and a jazz group. The problem is the designer creates topless clothing.

The Morley's eccentric cousin, Stella, is coming to Washington. She wants to give the couple a party the likes no one has ever seen. However, the family gets news that Stella may be bankrupt.

Steve officially has his driver's license and he's growing up. He hopes to ask a girl he likes to go steady however he has competition.

The Morleys are looking for a new housekeeper. Katy decides to give an unemployed man a chance. He's got a good heart however he can't do anything right.

Katy and Glen agree to try new things. However Glen takes an art class with a beautiful model. Katy tries and fails to join the class out of jealousy. She gets a spot when someone drops out...Glen.

To save money, Katy agrees to do the yard work and takes a class with a self absorbed professor. MEanwhile, Glen has no trouble spending the saved money on himself. So Katy pretends she hurt her ankle. Both feel guilty about their lies.

The kids decide that they want to be rock stars. They form a band called "Moe Hill and the Mountains", and ask Katy to be their manager.

Katy and Glen start fights over each others annoying habits. Both leave and refuse to be the first to come home. A cook at a diner convinces Glen that marriage is delicate give and take ,but worth it.

Steve is running for class president. He's losing and once he learns some dirt about his competition, he must decide whether or not to use it. He has a nightmare that features all the Morleys.

Katy and Glen are having dinner with another couple who are moving into a new home. Katy and Glen think about starting over and hire the same contractor who turns out to be a fraud.

Glen is anxious to watch the latest rocket liftoff. Soon Katy is dreaming that she becomes the first woman on the moon and Glen is a rather uptight flight director at mission control.

Members of the Sioux tribe tell Glen they own St. Paul and Minneapolis due to a faulty treaty. Glen tries to talk to the chief who will not be happy unless an historical mistake is fixed. Only the president can do that.

Glen's friend, Sam, comes to visit. He's allegedly writing a book and living life on a whim. Steve wants the same and Katy thinks Sam is a big liar. Steve tries to follow Sam who tells him , No. Turns out the book is real after all.

Katy and Glen are going to be interviewed on television. A few hours before, Katy goes shopping and is mistaken for a shoplifter. Katy is in jail and cannot get in touch with anyone at home.

Katy keeps getting mail-in orders for books she doesn't want. She tries to cancel but the computer keeps sending her books and bills.

Katy is the forewoman on an all woman jury and she wants to make sure justice is properly served. Meanwhile, Glen is home with the measles and dealing with a very noisy plumber.

The lines really get crossed.Katy buys a gift for her pregnant friend. Glen thinks Katy is pregnant and tells her he will get a new secretary so she can spend time at home. Katy then thinks Glen is having an affair with the new woman.

Glen is the guest of honor at a dinner in Minnesota. Meanwhile, Papa Holstrum announces he will run for the House of Representatives.

Katy gets into an argument with a woman at the hair salon. It turns out to be the wife of a Senator Glen is working with on a bill. The men hatch a plan to make the wives like each other but it affects the politicians relationship.

A Doctor tells Glen to lose weight. However, he keeps this from Katy. When her friends see Glen at a diner with the doctor's nurse, it's assumed he's having an affair. Meanwhile, the boys have a plan to ask Katy to adopt them.

Katy want to buy Glen a piece of expensive art. To raise the money she secretly cuts expenses and holds a garage sale. Glen is unaware and his friend is convinced Katy is saving money for a divorce.
