Discuss Maya the Bee

The show The Adventures of Maya the Honey Bee or みつばちマーヤの冒険 (Mitsubachi Māya no Bōken) was only one season between 1975 and 1976 with 52 episodes. The second show, 新みつばちマーヤの冒険 (Shin Mitsubachi Māya no Bōken) or The New Adventures of Maya the Honey Bee was a different run that was not a second season of the first one. The Cast and Crew are almost totally different and there were three directors of the 1975 version, only one of them worked on the 1979 version which was not run in Japan until 1982 and was not very well received. Each of these "seasons" should have their own entries as separate shows.

Disagree, it's called a sequel ehre; http://www.nippon-animation.co.jp/work/1419/

Cast and crew difference don't really matter and especially not how "well received" it is. This should just be named seasons! :)

ウイリーやフィリップなどの旧作からのキャラに加えて新しいキャラクターを登場させ、オリジナルストーリーでマーヤの新しい冒険を描く、7年ぶりの続編。

Well I was actually looking at that page, and yes it does say Sequel but a Sequel is not the same thing as a Season. Jaws II is a sequel to Jaws I but there were no seasons involved. If they had split the two movies up into 15 minute sessions and played them across multiple TV seasons until both movies were played out but calling all of them Jaws it would be multiple seasons of Jaws. However if they called the first series Jaws and the second series Jaws II then they would not be seasons but sequel series. Since these two series of Maya were a few years apart and carried different names, even in the original Japanese, they would be considered sequel series but not seasons as they are named differently. Normally a season is a single show title with multiple episodes carried out over multiple TV seasons. I probably should have worded my original post differently as it really was not about how well they were received but that they were differently titled TV shows separated by time but carrying on stories in the same fictional universe. So sequel yes, season no. smiley

Just to clarify, and @alltimemarr please correct me if I'm wrong, anime series do not follow the episodes spit into multiple season format. A series should be in a single season and proper sequels are added as new seasons. The data is easier to manage if the sequels are grouped together. smiley_cat

You are – partly – wrong. It depends which series it is. The long-running animated sitcom Sazae-san (not on TMDb, which only lists some live-action adaptations of the same comic) doesn't have distinct seasons, but the adult-aimed SF drama Attack on Titan does.

Children's anime series like Maya, like Western animated ones, are commissioned as big blocks to run every week for a year or a subdivision of one.

みつばちマーヤの冒険 and 新みつばちマーヤの冒険 appear as different series with their own pages on Nippon Animation's website, so going on the wording of the contribution bible, the gap of some years between them, changes in title and change in staff and character designs, I would be inclined to consider 新みつばちマーヤの冒険 a sequel, not a second season. But it is an unclear case – on the other hand, the studio is the same.
