1914. Wilfred and Eileen have married in secret but when Wilfred joins the London Rifle Brigade and war is declared, they are forced to face some harsh realities.

Wilfred fights in the trenches, and at home Eileen anxiously awaits his letters -now the only link between them. Suddenly Wilfred's letters stop and Eileen sets out to discover what has happened.

Eileen returns to London with Wilfred and enlists outside help in her fight to keep Wilfred alive.

Physically, Wilfred seems to be recovering but the strain of his ordeal is affecting his relationship with Eileen.
