And then after, the top 3 of the entire show, and then seasons. This was obviously something down frequently on the IMDB boards, but we can repost here.
Episodes of S6: IMO
Heartless (Well directed, good cinematography, both atmospheric and enticing, it ends with an amazing twist that begins to explore a new plot element which has not been introduced before and is rather clever) - 7.5/10
Murder Most Foul (in love with mysteries, and although I predicted it I felt almost everything, other than the Visual Effects, was a step up from what it was in the beginning of this season) - 7.5/10
Strange Case (one of the only episodes of this season where I did not predict what was to occur in the first fifteen minutes. The writers writed themselves off of a potential disaster if they did not do the ending they did) - 7/10
Episodes of All: IMO
There's No Place Like Home (a fun, intense, strong season finale with good dialogue and a well written plot that tied up the show neatly, and although I am not particularly a Captain Swan fan, it was less overt here and it did not distract from the plot) - 9/10
Going Home (A beautiful episode, tying everything neatly together with a bow, with both new themes introduced in the beginning of the show interweaves with new plot elements. A stunningly acted episode with twists, turns, and immensity I was not expecting) - 9/10
A Land Without Magic (Great performances together. A wonderful season finale to a great opening season) - 8.75/10
Seasons: (Complete Ranking) IMO
Season 3 (My only flaw with this season were of the like: timeline meddling, although infrequent at that time, some repetition, and a few poor episodes, although all these were ultimately overshadowed with the most character-driven powerful season where the takes were the highest) - 8.5/10
Tie between Season Two and Season One (I cannot place one over the other because, although very different, suffered through the same problems: tonal inconsistencies, an uneven plot, but both eventually gained footing, and a few poor episodes [Tiny, Lacey, and Selfless, Brave, and True for the former, and That Still Small Voice, Dreamy and The Shepherd for the latter] Both were captivating, however and I was astounded by the cleverness and storytelling.) - 8.5/10 Again
Season 5 (Mainly just because it was more grounded than the other two seasons, mainly a disappointment) 7/10
Season 4 (Thought a little unnecessary) 6.5/10
Season 6A (Only about two or three good episodes) 5.5/10
If I were to rank them by A and B's IMO
3A - 9.5 1B - 9 2A - 9 2B - 8 1A - 8 3B - 7.5 5A - 7.5 4A - 7 5B - 6.5 4B - 6 6A - 5.5

Season 1 is the best season and really none of the others compare, in my opinion. Season 2 and 3A have some good episodes, but they also have major structural errors in the writing that probably have to do with the writers changing their plans about things at the last moment. The show has never been good since then.
Best episodes. A Land Without Magic. Snow Falls. True North. Red Handed. An Apple Red as Blood. Manhattan is probably one of the best episodes of this show. Certainly of Season 2. Tallahassee. Queen of Hearts. The Millers Daughter. Going Home. Lost Girl.

I can see where your coming from. Season One felt the most magical. The series had to force that feeling later on instead of having that mystery and fairy-tale like feeling come naturally.

Yeah, Season 1 naturally follows the characters decisions. We are shown Emma learning to care about Henry. Deciding to stay for him. We see Regina resisting that. Then Emma getting a job. Becoming friends with Snow. Doubting Henry, but knowing something was up with the town and wrong with Regina. Then the mystery of who people were and what they remembered and how each story was twisted from the originals and yet hinted at the Disney. Then Regina tried to kill Emma and instead Henry almost died. Emma believed. And how good that ending was, how earned it was because you follow Emma and Henry and Regina and Snow's decisions right to that moment. It was good.
Season 1 wasn't perfect. I think the affair plot went on too long and in the wrong way and they didn't show enough of Regina's motivation. I remember wondering if she had her memories for a very long time and then when we realized she did it was just some random conversation with Gold in his shop. That conversation should have happened much earlier in the show. It was still good, solid, character driven writing.
Now the characters don't even decide anything; things just happen to them. The show barely has a plot because character growth and change is plot.
