Discuss Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

First I'm 46 and watched TOS when I was young and it's still a reference for me. Then I liked TNG as it remained strong with the stories and characters, and maintained the "feel" of Star Trek with the values of self discovery, friendship, sacrifice and cooperation with unknown people. Voyager was a sad joke with annoying personnel and incoherent stories. Didn't have the courage to watch Enterprise as Scott Bakula lacks charisma so much. The new movies may be good for teenagers liking bland characters and action. So back to DS9. As usual the first seasons are there to introduce the characters and the specifics of the setting. This is done so well, with Kira and Garak introducing the Bajoran and Cardassian cultures and antagonisms (and strong recurring secondary characters such as Opaka, Winn, Dukat, Damar), Quark for the Ferengi, annoying at first, but growing as interesting and fun (and Rom, Nog), Dax with the Trill, Sisko, Bashir, O'Brien for the humans, Odo for the changeling. DS9 developed these characters, their motivations, secrets, changes masterfully. Take O'Brien (previously seen in TNG), he has some of the darkest episodes (Hard Time) and even develops a family. Dax has 3 different characters. Garak is both a tailor and an espionnage agent. And then the Dominion conflict brings a continuing story, with some of the characters having their feelings change more or less. That's where the series shows it is well written and built, as the war is the center, but there are side stories too that are great.

And I always got a kick out of Doctor Bashir.

Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night.

I'm 5 episodes from the end of season 3 and I can see why people say the show gets better. I've loved this season a lot more than the first two seasons.

@SpaceRanger06 : One of my favorite DS9 episodes is Our Man Bashir. Alexander Siddig did an awesome job as Bashir's holodeck program spy, who by some strange coincidence has the same initials as everyone's favorite British Secret Service Agent.

@PhelpsFan I look forward to it. 13 episodes to get through before I get to that one.

One supporting character I've come to love in these first three seasons is Andrew Robinson as Garak. I went on IMDb to see his credits and saw that his last acting role was 2005. Anyone know why he's stopped acting?

No, I haven't heard anything. I read that he directed some episodes of either Voyager or Enterprise.

Well, he is 75 years old now

@Jayhn1111 : Thanks for the information!

I just saw him on an episode of streets of san francisco. I knew he had to be getting up there in age since that was mid 70's.

@Jayhn1111 : Did you know that Andrew played a bad guy in one of the Dirty Harry movies?

Now that you mention it that does sort of ring a bell. I haven't seen that movie in about 25 years so I don't remember it all that well.

Watching S04E08 Little Green Men... it's funny. I've really begun to love this show. S3 was excellent and now this season is great too.

One of the problems with DS9 was how stiff Avery Brooks seemed to be in the first two seasons, but luckily by season three he really relaxed and as a result did a lot better in the role.

@ Maria Kelly : Andrew played the killer Scorpio in the first Dirty Harry movie whose character was based on the real Zodiac case.He also played the father in Hellraiser.

Yes, I remember that movie, and I think he was in the Ryan's Hope soap opera.
