If I recall correctly, boom, they suddenly have kids with barely a mention and definitely not showing pregnancy. Why? There's no insight to be had about that? Was it considered too mundane or "undignified" to delve into that?

i don't know... maybe they didn't want to make her look too motherly... it would have been nice to see a portrayal of a pregnant woman as protagonist for once...

Oddly, tonight on one of the PBS channels a documentary was re-broadcast about QE with many people, some quite famous, making remarks about her. The actor Ben Kingsley came off as a huge fan of the queen and said that she was beloved (in part) because she fulfilled the role of a much-needed "mum" of the country:
