I think this show is brilliant. I haven't read the book yet, though I will at some point. I get the negative aspects you are referring to, but I actually think everything worked for the show. Not sure if you are passed your teen years like I am, but I sometimes think being a bit older can make it hard to relate to suicidal teens (and teen drama in general), because we know there is so much life to live after high school. Teens' perspectives are so limited, because they have a hard time seeing past the present moment. That poor girl had to endure so much, though. But man, Katherine Langford's performance blew me away.
