Frankly Star Trek has been dead for a pretty long time now. Paramount is more or less just walking around with a dead corpse trying to convince everybody that its still alive. Like in the movie "Weekend at Bernies". Everything Star Trek was about is pretty much gone. And frankly Orville seems more like a worthy successor than Discovery will be. I just hope that if Discovery flops. Maybe they will let Star Trek die with some dignity.
If Discovery is bad, and if Paramount decides to just forget about Star Trek as a result, it won't be because Star Trek itself is bad or dead. It will be because various people were trying to use the Star Trek vehicle/name for some other goal of their own, rather than do it right for its own sake. Same as JJ Abrams has done with the awful "reboot" movies.
Star Trek and all the spinoffs that followed deserves so much more respect than what is being given on this board.
In fact, the Smithsonian channel is doing a 2hr show that explores the influence the series has had on the world with respect to science and technology.
The fact that the franchise has produced so many projects and has been around so long has to say something. Something positive, more so than anything negative.
I for one am excited about the new Star Trek Discovery and will be watching with enthusiasm.
Hope is much like fear; it is an emotional connection to the uncertainty of the future, of crossroads not yet reached, of paths not yet taken. It is for the aged, the downtrodden, the weary.
I asume the OP is a TNG lover and hates DS9 and Voyager. The last 5 seasons of DS9 was better then the TNG and voyager was about equal.
But he hates it so no one else can watch it.
I'm just not impressed with this new show. It's still not Trek. Trek ended after Enterprise got cancelled (which has always saddened me). The so-called new movies after that are just NOT Trek. As others have said, the people who made them are just trying to cash in on the name. They don't care about staying true to the Canon storylines. Ergo, NOT Trek. And again, this isn't either.
I'm going back to The Orville. At least they're admitting they're a spoof and not Trek.

You know i don't mind DS9. But other than some really great stand out episodes like The Vistor, Trials and Tribble-ations, and Far Beyond the Stars. I just couldn't get into DS9. Especially when they started the whole Dominion War. It totally lost me. If i want to watch a war in space. I would watch Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica. Even the cheesy 70's version.

Really? DS9 had some pretty incredible space-battle scenes. Right up there with the best of Babylon 5. Way better than most of Star Wars unless you believe in "dogfighting in space" which is plainly ridiculous.

TNG was great.
DS9 was a poor man's Babylon 5
Voyager was pure excrement
Star Trek Voyager got better towards the end. Frankly Discovery is way worse than Voyager was. At least Voyager had some likable characters that were somewhat interesting.

Ach! Bite your tongue! I'm a big Voyager fan. It really wasn't that bad. And I love that BBCA airs it now. I rewatched the entire series from start to finish this past year. My favorite episodes are still the Fair Haven episodes. But then, I love Ireland, so I'm biased.

It might be time to dispense with the hopeful vision of humanity's future.

Voyager's episodes were solid! TNG, and esp the original series, had many lacking episodes.
I prefer TNG's cast most, but Voyager's screenplay won me over.
Am half-way thro Enterprise, and I'm liking it very much.
Voyager > TNG > Enterprise > Original FLAME ME!!!

Seriously? No matter how bleak life may seem, there is always hope.

There is no true despair without hope.
