It was a 95% certainty to be honest. How the second season goes is crucial to the shows success. It needs to keep its viewers and it also need to generate some word of mouth interest in fan circles and in entertainment circles.
Enterprise's fate was arguably sealed in its second season, with its lack of good anything. No good narrative, lack of originality, boring stuff that has been done much better.
Only thing was, Enterprise wasn't behind a paywall.
I wouldn't have minded that either, but THEY went and called it Star Trek, and said it takes place 10 years before TOS. So all the problems are their fault, and nobody else's.
I would have preferred it played in the alternate time line but after watching 9 episodes , I think the writers ,in all honesty , have done a worthy job at blending all the new parts in the Prime Time ..
For one thing I enjoyed the episode about Sarek , sadly we got to see him so little in the Original series.
Amanda here in my opinion is depicted too "cold , tough" towards Sarek, though...
So back to your comment...Exactly what MENTIONABLE problems are you referring to?
Seems to me they showed an Amanda that's too young to have been Spock's mother, but I suppose that is arguable.
Amanda was born in 2200 and Michael applied for a place in the VEG in 2249..so she is supposed to be 49 years old .
I agree the actress they cast to play Amanda looks too young ....
Also making the maths ,she is supposed to have been married with Sarek already 20 years yet I didn't see any chemistry between them like Spock's parents in TOS (Journey to Babel).
The whole scene with her and Sarek didn't work for me.
Said that , I really like James Frain's portrait of Sarek.
And while Spock represented the Vulcan universe in TOS and we witnessed the inner pain caused by his decision to live his life by logic suppressing his human side , it will be exciting to see how actually Sarek's choice to go against the Vulcan ways , marry a human ,have a child with her and soon after adopt Michael played out... all the repercussions of such emotional based choices in a world where emotions were considered a weakness..interesting material to explore, in my opinion.
I can understand Spock's decision to prefer Starfleet over the Vulcan science Academy because, despite his extraordinary scholarship achievements , he realised he would always be considered and treated as an inferior on Vulcan.
Instead of understanding his son's choice , Sarek saw his actions as an immature act of rebellion towards him which inadvertently made his preference for Spock over Michael for a place at the Vulcan academy turn out to be a terrible mistake.
Sarek is overwhelmed by guilt and shame in Michael's regards but instead of realising that he alone was responsible for what happened ,taking it upon himself to make the choice which was not up to him to make ,he blamed his son and sadly chose not to talk to him for 18 years.
Obviously, behind the notorious stoic behaviour of Sarek ,we have instead a very emotionally conflicted person.....His family life must have been quite a roller-coaster ride ..I love drama ..so I'm really happy the direction STD has taking in slowly fleshing Sarek out ,making him the multidimensional character he missed out on being in TOS.
Maybe those that don't like STD should watch Orville ...I read that it's TRUE STAR TREK...personally , I saw the trailer and to me it looked simply dumb comedy ...I don't remember TOS being that.
You would do yourself a favor by actually watching a few episodes of The Orville. It has more.... overall, I suppose... humor than Star Trek in particular TOS which is probably the best comparison. And TOS had plenty of humor. But with The Orville I'd say it works, and I'm not alone.
You would do yourself a favor by actually watching a few episodes of The Orville.
I took your advice and binge watched the first 6 episodes .
It didn't feel Trek to me even though the second episode was in part a rehash of "The Cage".
and the fourth of "For the World is Hollow..."
There are a lot more things I don't like in this series than I fancy..
I can truly do without the (flat , stale ) comedy and the two men at the helm are literally obnoxious .
I have more sympathy for the lime blob than I have for them.
The episode with the voting system was actually a good idea but sadly Lt.Lamer parts are cringeworthy.
The episode on the Krill spaceship could have been way better had the writer(s) left out the idiotic banter dialogue between the Captain and Malloy.
The gender changing episode was interesting .
I think Bortus and Alara are likeable characters followed by Isaac.
The Captain and Kelly , when they aren't having their banters over the adultery issue ( as the episodes proceed, it gets less , I noticed) actually pair well.
One of the worse episodes instead was with Charlize Theron..a rip off of that episode in TNG with Picard and Vash..and the lame leg joke .. It's most probably the most pathetic joke in the whole series up to now..it's worse than a bad Laurel and Oliver stretch .
I can't say I'm madly hooked because I find the comedy parts terrible annoying and unfortunately they are a dime a dozen in this series.. But seeing STD won't be back until Jan next year no harm in watching the Orville...
There are 2 things I actually find to my liking .
The phrase: can you help me open this pickle
jar ? and
Kermit on the Captain's desk..( I'm a great fan of Sesame Street) .
It sounds like you might be comparing it a bit too closely to TOS/TNG. I haven't heard anyone say they consider Orville to be SUPERIOR to past Trek shows, but a lot of people do consider it superior to the CURRENT Trek show. And many people think it's more of the same kind of feel as TOS especially. More jokey? Sure. But TOS had plenty of jokes/humor too. TOO jokey? That's an individual thing, and even if it's TOO jokey for some people, it can still be closer to TOS than Discovery is.
@I saw it now... I think it was in the episode where Alara goes to the Captain and asks to be relieved .It's not the first time we see exhibited passed models of space ships or flying vechiles in a Captain's office but this model looked like it came from a cereal box... Orville comedy again.

@The Orville and TOS are more alike than STD is to TOS certainly not because of the comedy aspect , which was a MINOR aspect in TOS ⦠the comedy on the Orville is overwhelming and INTENTIONAL .. one liners , short dialogues and set scenes have been written with the sole intent to make the audience laugh.
Exceptions aside , TOS was never about making its audience laugh⦠its thought provoking themes and its optimistic view of a mankind united , where wars , fame , diseases and diversity are no more are its trade mark.
TOS was produced some 50 years ago , long before CGI , naturally ..so obviously its out dated props and kinky rubber alien costumes now come off as comicalā¦not to speak of Shatnerās hammy , overacting and some ridiculous storylines . So the comedy you are referring to in Star Trek ā is purely unintentional.
The Orville and TOS are similar because both spaceships are on an exploratory mission , which brings them in contact with new civilizations ..itās set during a non -war period. In this aspect they are the same but the excess of (childish ,dumb ) comedy in The Orville is more a drawback ,while the limited HUMOUR (not jokey comedy) in TOS was a delightful asset.
When JJ.Abrams crap films were being done , among other options , Trekkies were hoping for a come back of the bada$$ Klingons or a follow up of the Mirror, Mirror universe and now that they have both in one series (Frakes confirmed the Mirrror Mirror episode(s) ) they are still moaning.
The Klingons donāt look right, really ? Their facial aspect has gone through multiple drastic changes over the last 30 odd years ...it's old cake .
Many donāt like the dark feeling in STD . Really? Itās dark because in this new incarnation the federation is at war with the Klingons ,the most loved VILLAINS of the entire franchiseā¦they represent everything Gene detested in humans ..creed and violence.. fans should āhateā them and instead they even invented a language for them. Letās be coherent ..you want to see the Klingons then you can expect violence , terror and bloodshed to be part of the deal.
The main characters Michael and Tyler are war victims , even badass, shady Lorca has his own demons and inner battle scars and he's most likely to be from the Mirror , Mirror universe tooā¦so itās obvious heās not going to be like Kirk (straight forward) or Picard (a diplomat). Let's be coherent here too...you want the Mirror , Mirror universe then you can expect to see the negative traits of a person to be part of the deal.
Gene had an optimistic view of humanity ās future...but the universe he wanted Kirk to boldly explore is full of alien life forms , only someone naĆÆve could believe that they all would believe in his brotherhood vision .
War is not the only topic on STD..we get to see a more fleshed out Sarek, more insight about the Vulcan rebels , a couple of new races ā¦the original series will always be for me the heart of Star Trek but I donāt think its fair to thumbs down and call STD āmanure ā, like poster mcse2000ca above did.
Actually, the Flyer model could even be seen in episode 1. Kermit is more recent.
@But You have to agree Kermit is bigger and bright coloured, so more reason to see him straight off than a miniature model plane tinted pale on a white surface .
Understandable why the Flyer but do we know why he has Kermit there?
I realize that Discovery is definatly "not your father's Star Trek" but I do hope it gets better. I starting to think also that Discovery should have been set in the future, after the time of all the previous Trek series. And CBS may be renewing Discovery because it would be extremely embarrassing to cancel a Trek series after only one season.

Ed mentioned at least once that he admired Kermit's leadership abilities.

Indeed. How he kept things going even during chaos, etc. I don't remember for sure which episode it was.
