Discuss Star Trek: Discovery

We all know that the cool kids hate any post-Kelvin Trek, but it was pointed out recently that the old newsgroups weren't always positive about Trek, either.

I have better things to do than search for archives to see what was said, so I used my imagination. There are probably lots of other things that might have been said, but these are what sprang to my mind. So, broken down by show, here we have the sort of whiney complaints I can imagine would have been levelled against earlier Trek shows if the net had been so negative back in the day:

TOS:

  • Have you heard the pilot was so bad that they scrapped it? This show will be cancelled within 3 episodes - just look on 4Chan.
  • OMG! This isn't proper SF! It's like Wagon Train on a space ship!
  • The producer has never done SF and doesn't lknow what he's doing.
  • So they've hired some SF writers - doesn't mean they can do TV.
  • Why would a military vessel have women on the bridge?
  • WTF? There's a black woman that they treat as an equal? Plus a slanty eyed bloke. And an English guy in engineering.
  • That commie is on the bridge because this show is commie progpaganda. They don't even use money! RedLetterMedia and MidnightsEdge both have proof!
  • This show is so cheap they've recycled bits from the canned pilot!
  • If they have transporters, why do they need shuttlecraft? Poor writing!
  • If they have replicators why do the need mining? The writers know nothing.
  • That guy playing the captain is so out of shape he has to wear a corset!
  • Ha! They can't afford to do space battles so that pointy-eared guy has to describe them!
  • The old producer was rubbish - that's why they have a new one. Won't save this train wreck, though.

TOS Movies:

  • WTF? Why have they got new uniforms?
  • What have they done to the Klingons?
  • The writers aren't sticking to canon. Khan never met Chekov.
  • They've killed the best character! I'm never watching Trek again! The writers don't know what the fans want!
  • They've realised their mistake and brought Spock back. Typical.
  • These films are making so little money that they've had to set it in today's Earth to save budget.
  • How come Spock never mentioned his half brother? The writers have no regard for canon.
  • Why is McCoy contributing to the lie about Kirk putting it around?

TNG:

  • WTH? Why are they wearing onsies?
  • What are kids doing on the Enterprise?
  • The new Enterprise looks rubbish.
  • What is that old British guy doing in charge?
  • What's with that chick who keeps rabbiting on about feelings?
  • This will never last as long as the real Star Trek.
  • There's no way a woman would be head of security! Women can't do that sort of job!
  • Data is just a knock off of Spock, the writers can't come with new characters.
  • Why is that black guy wearing a car air filter? This show is so cheap!
  • They're so PC! Too many women in the command crew - that would never happen!
  • Who came up with the holodeck idea? It's stupid!
  • How could Picard recover from being changed to a Borg - it's bad writing!

TNG Movies:

  • Yet another new Enterprise!
  • They killed Kirk! I'm never watching Trek again!
  • What rubbish! They're messing with the timelines.
  • The writers are ruining Trek. The Federation is united, not a load of squabbling factions.
  • That bloke playing young Picard looks nothing like him. At least we'll never see him in anything else.

DS9:

  • Political correctness gone mad! That's the only reason the commander is Black.
  • They had to put some of the TNG cast in this as no-one would tune in otherwise.
  • Ha ha! Those guys with the big ears are so dumb!
  • Hang on! The Trill can sometimes be men, but can then be women? That's disgusting! SJWs have taken over.
  • This will never last as long as TNG!
  • Guys! Babylon 5 is much better than this woke rubbish! Walter Koenig is in it too!

VOY:

  • OMG, I could just about stomach a Black lead, but some old woman! This is too much!
  • MidnightsEdge says that the proper actress who was cast left because the script was so bad. So they got Mrs Columbo instead.
  • This won't even make a full season!
  • RedLetterMedia says that the ratings are so bad that they are bringing in some hot chick. They're so desperate!

ENT:

  • The tech is too new!
  • Spock was the first Vulcan in the Federation - the writers don't know anything!
  • Canon! Canon! Canon!
  • At least they've finally realised that a starship wouldn't be full of women. 4Chan says they have proof that this will be the longest running Trek show ever.

I forgot this one.

VOY: How desperate must they be to do a WWF crossover? Did you see that guy "The Rock"? What makes them think he'll ever be able to break out of wrestling to make it in films and TV?

Thanks for that. Interesting that part you bolded about DIS becoming one of the world's most streamed shows. Bet MidnightsEdgeLord has "proof" it's all a lie.

I'm also wondering what the gender split is like. My suspicion is that most of the fulltime haters will be male.

Similarly, I have noticed that fans do get very possessive of "their" shows and the stars. Back when I used to go to conventions, I used to get annoyed by people talking about the stars they had met (or even been in the same room as) as if they were best friends who regularly got together.

Re Trump: Unfortunately his style of politics (which seems to have been borrowed from Hitler) seems to work at the moment. Over here his mini-me Boris Johnson has identified and blamed a group for all the problems (immigrants and "Europeans" here rather than Mexicans) and coasted to success by repeating simple slogans and lying. The "normal folk" love him and somehow think that a guy who went to Eton has their best interests at heart. At least over here his supporters don't use their guns to intimidate others.

Re TNG: I rarely find that older shows are as good as we remember them and it's often a mistake to revisit them - best to keep the happy memories. Films and especially books seem to fare much better though. Whilst I'd broadly agree with most of those criticisms (most of them are why I wasn't a huge fan of TNG) but I do think that it's harsh to write off the whole show, which was very much of its time, because of them. If nothing else, the show did bring a much greater acceptance of SF as a genre.
