Why are the parents so awful?

Cheryl's parents (especially the mom), Betty's parents, Jughead's dad, Josie's dad, they are mean, manipulative, selfish, devoid of any empathy whatsoever and just plain awful. I'm not sure a single character has 2 decent parents. Why did the writers make the parents so awful, and for some, abusive?

Heaven forbid that Hollywood makes an actual loving functional family series...
These days it's either obnoxious parents or obnoxious big mouth kids..
