This was clearly Lange's episode and she was brilliant. It's not easy being green ... with envy. And it's not easy for any actor to dig so deep into their inner psyche to play such an obnoxious character. I just hated Joan and Hedda in this episode. Their vicious, conniving, merciless machinations to ruin Davis's chances of winning Best Actress, compounded by Joan's sick and perverted plan to upstage her by accepting Anne Bancroft's Oscar. FYI I thought the actress who played Bancroft was miscast and awful. Not only did she convince Bancroft to 'forfeit' her honor, she also played the same 'I'm a legend, revere me' card with Geraldine Page.
Nice bit with director George Cukor. "Joan, you're better than this" Joan: "No. I'm not."
Nitpicks. They called the Oscar ceremony was held at the Santa Monica Pacific Theater. It was the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. I live mere blocks away. Sadly it is a ghost of a shell of a building. Attempts to revitalize have failed. Also, according to Davis in her interviews, she invited her family (except for B.D.) to the ceremony so they could see her win and I believe she was sitting in the audience, not waiting in the wings as portrayed.
Sarandon's shock to "And the winner is ... Anne Bancroft!" announced by Crawford was gut wrenching and heartbreaking.

That was heart breaking for Bette...it really was. I just don't understand why Joan Crawford was so insecure like she was. I've enjoyed watching her character in this until last night's show. She pissed me the hell off playing those games just to get even with Bette . I kept wanting someone to slap her silly. Bette knew how to play the game and she played her best with promoting that while Joan did nothing but whine. Infuriating.

It was awful acting. Susan kind of impressed me with her reaction back stage to losing. But not in a "wow, that's just how Bette Davis would have reacted" kind of way.
It was more like Susan showed a little bit of dramatic acting chops.

Interesting photos and videos of 1963 Oscars and Joan's silver hair.

Nothing at all like the tv show. She was so humble. Not proud at all. Joan was such star. I love her.

Wow. Great article and photos. Thanks! I recall hearing Frank Sinatra's voice in the background as presenter and thought, "what a great impersonation!" Guessing now since it was off screen that they used his real voice from the telecast. I'm glad I'm not the only one who wanted to slap her silly.

Love this link! So cool to see the real thing play out. Can't believe Joan was such a bitch though.

I was curious to see the real Joan's silver look... almost afraid to look, hoping it wasn't a mistake for her, but she looked lovely. I have to laugh at the way she was ogling Gregory Peck :)

Well, Bette knew that. She should have gave Joan a little props when she received her nomination, but she rolled the dice.

You are right. Just a little props. But I had no idea the competition they pretended not to have re: Academy Awards. Here is a link I found of Bette on the Johny Carson Show. she does not discuss the incident. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etj1ieSeBT8
