Looks more like a spoof, but I'll probably watch the pilot of both and see how I like them.
Yes, this is precisely what I feel it's supposed to be. This is a comedy first, and sci-fi second. I am/was a MASSIVE Trekkie. The new crap Paramount is putting out is ridiculous. That is not Trek in any way, shape, or form. Roddenberry is probably spinning in his grave, and you'll notice that Paramount waited until Barrett died before even TRYING to go the route they have gone. She never would have let them do this.
Anyway, I was kind of skeptical when I saw the previews, but I'm so glad I tuned in to the first episode. It is hilarious. And I'm so glad they did NOT try the whole "Let's beam down" kind of thing. Sticking with the shuttles, etc., is the right move. In some ways, this show reminds me of Red Dwarf, and I have really missed that show, and it seems to have a little MST:3K thrown in too. I really think this show is going to succeed, and I'm truly enjoying it. I've missed having a sci-fi show to watch.

You know they still make Red Dwarf, a new season starts in October.

When a "season" might be only 3 episodes, they have plenty of free time and story options. Since Feb 1988 - that's almost 30 years now - they've only shown 67 episodes so far. That's less than all three seasons of original Star Trek. Let alone nearly 200 episodes each for the sequels except for Enterprise. (And Enterprise still had almost 100.)

The Uk generally makes a series/season with way less episodes than the USA. Besides I was just telling Satai Delenn that it was still being made, not commenting on the amount of episodes.
I felt the same way. While the show was just OK, it was much more comfy than anything nu-trek. I got a much more traditional Trek feel from this and that automatically makes it better than anything since Voyager. I am extremely skeptical about Discovery.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen it since the late 90s because it doesn't air where I live. As far as I knew, it was done a long time ago. Thanks for the info. Makes me even more sad though, because I can't get it.

Just google it and you can find out where to watch it online or where to buy the DVD's. Here is a link to Amazon & the different sets available there.

The Orville is about as funny as I can stand, for that kind of show.
