Discuss The Orville

Well just saw the season 2 final episode, and enjoyed it. Was wondering if anyone has heard if the show has been renewed for a third season or not. I myself hope that it has. It's a very good show and deserves to continue.

oh man, wish we didn't have to wait so long. LOL. I'm going to expect it to be renewed, though . If Star Trek Discovery could be renewed, this show definitely can

I fully expect that the "Teen Age Mutant TV Programmers" at Fox TV will CANCEL "The Orville" for some Hipster reason. (After all, we can't confuse our mental age preteen audience with Substantial/Heavy/Meaningful topics on TV, can we? Those Adult Things belong on the "syfy" channel or Adult Swim.)

SyFy? You mean The Wrestling Channel?

Hopefully Mcfarland has enough pull with Network to keep on for few more season. Otherwise the only we have to look forward is the geriatric Picard show produced by Alex "talentless hack" Kurtzman.

Here is the honest truth guys, make of it what you will. The Orville can not survive in it's current format: its not really sci-fi; drama; or fully comedy with a point, which was it's best hope for success. That is why Galaxy Quest was a movie, one and done. Now there IS an argument for a serialized parody of the genre succeeding but it would mean the following:TO would have to abandon any claim to serious sci-fi; drop it's attempts at high drama; sharpen it's humor so that it makes a laudable POINT; and broaden the target of it's parody. Instead of just Star Trek, make USEFUL fun of the entire fantasy or sci-fi genre in ways that people will get!!! Think something more along the lines of 'The hitch hikers guide to the galaxy'.

Unfortunately, it may already be too late for that plus I doubt that is what you (its fans) want. You appear to want ST light, laughing at those who don't matter.

Frankly i prefer the episodic format. Most serialized show are just high budget glorified soap opera with horrible endings. Mostly because they run out of idea. I think TNG did a good job of referencing back to early episodes without require you to watch everything in order. So at least you could feel that there a continuity. Unlike serial shows. It lets every character have a chance to shine, instead of just one like STD. Orville seems to be following that formula, which im totally fine with me.

The texture and format that comes closest to what I think MIGHT work for TO is the type we see in a show like "Dr Who".

Dr Who is serialized but not heavily so. You can easily pick up the thread of events halfway through a season. It uses some sci-fi but does not rely entirely on science to drive the narrative. It has a well established scientific world and has played within it for half a century now. Both its humor and drama is whimsical/light, although as a child I was deathly afraid of it's 'Daleks'. Dr Who is driven mostly by the personality and the interaction between the actors playing the Dr and his space/time traveling companion.

Notwithstanding, it is a very sharp commentary on man and his attitude towards space, science, what he does and doesn't understand about the world around him and how he might react to aliens among other things. Its humor works to underscore its social commentary. This is what is mostly lacking in TO. Comedy without an underlying purpose only works in a sitcom, sometimes not even then.

This is a British show btw and for the first time in 50 odd years the character of the doctor is recently being played by a woman. A 50 year old doctor is suddenly female! Can you imagine the cow ST fans would have if captain Kirk suddenly became a woman? Oh wait...

Haven't seen anything on the Fox website yet! This article is making a conjecture. At any rate I hope TO can come up with something more ORIGINAL for season 3, but I am not holding my breath

"Frankly i prefer the episodic format. Most serialized show are just high budget glorified soap opera with horrible endings. "

Nygma-0999, have you seen a few episodes of Dr Who back to back? It is definitely NOT a soap opera. It is comedy using the sci-fi genre as a backdrop, not even a parody really. I'd even say it is more serious than ha, ha funny. However in Dr Who the science is more tongue in cheek than anything else. You can catch a few episodes on YouTube, you'll see what I mean.

My problem with TO is that it wants all things, all the time. " be ha, ha funny ; while it pretends to propose serious science and drama; as well as carry through the love story of all on board. Sometimes, I don't know whether I'm supposed to laugh at the Krill or fear them. I might have forgiven TO for usurping ST plots wholesale, if they had as least bothered to come up with ORIGINAL takes. Issue of state sanctioned infanticide for sex selection that's nice and juicy...take a freaking side! Tyranny of the Majority, there again a good moral, philosophical issue take a position, don't just leave.

TV has changed since the 60s guys. The flat characters will no longer be good enough.Audiences are more sophisticated. The want depth and growth in their heroes. In Kirk's day Tony Sopranos could not have survived. Why do you think there are so many show with anti heroes these days? Bad people who we love. Audiences binge watch their tv shows and they expect their tv shows to be as cinematic , as well thought out and as epic as The ten commandments.

That's DSC not TO

It's official I have heard from reliable sources. The Orville will get a 3rd Season. I'm not 100% sure on the rest of the details, but I do know The Orville IS renewed for a third Season.

It is nice to know that, even in today's Hollywood, there are still a few people with at least average intelligence. Like the ones responsible for okaying the third season for The Orville.

I "quite like" TO, but I can't agree that it's a model of intelligent TV. I'm also surprised at how much love it gets as I find the MacFarlane humour sits uneasily with the TNG tone (and plots and style and...) of the rest of the show. I guess it would be boring if we all liked the same thing.

I think that all of Nu Who, with the possible exception of Chibnall's tenure, has been a bit too serialized - especially in the Moffat era - with the team striving for season-long arcs that weren't necessary. I don't think I've really enjoyed it since Matt Smith left. Peter Capaldi was a great choice for the Doctor, but was ill-served by the writers and Jodie Whitaker has been saddled with some of the dullest companions, sorry - friends, ever. That said, Bradley Walsh's performance has been way better than I expected.

There certainly was a lot of backlash about the Doctor becoming a woman. My personal worry was that I've always thought that Jodie Whitaker was an attractive lady and it would be strange to see her as someone who's basically Trans (I know it's more complicated than that). However, I found I never think about that - she just is The Doctor. It possibly helps that her version of the character is a little annoying!

Frankly i hope this show last longer than STD. Because it deserves to be recognized as a worthy Trek successor. Besides a little too much focus on Moclans. This Last Season was excellent.

The whole female Dr Who situation is very illustrative. My understanding is that the 'Doctor' in Dr Who is an alien. So, everything else being the same, the only qualms anyone can really have about a female actress playing the part, I'm sorry, would be based on misogyny. Haven't seen Whitaker's version of the character yet but from what I recall wasn't the Doctor always annoying? I think the people behind TO should take a serious look at the tone and texture of Dr Who because THAT is a niche that is not occupied in American TV but I doubt they will. Why should they when they can simply copy ST and thrown in some off color humor at the same time.
