As it's categorized on TVDB. From HBO's press release: "The follow-up to 2017’s The Young Pope... The series picks up where The Young Pope left off." Much of the case including Jude Law return from The Young Pope. Etc... Story-wise it's the definition of a Season 2, but they're giving it its own title, like Deutschland 83 and Deutschland 86. So I can see the dilemma, I just want to ask the question here.

Hi, I think the key is how the series is presented on the official website. I can't see that from my current location. Maybe someone else can take a look? Then compare that to a second season of another HBO series.

As of now (prior to The New Pope episodes airing), this is what the header of The Young Pope's page looks like compared to Succession's: Young Pope, Succession. Young Pope and New Pope have different individual show pages, though each links the other in their header in the space other shows link their own seasons. On HBO's series list page they only list Young Pope for now.
Edit: P.S. Another coming season that should have a similar issue is HBO's The Story of a New Name, the follow-up to My Brilliant Friend, a TV series adaptations of the 4-part Neapolitan Novels series by Elena Ferrante. Each season follows the first 2 same-titled books.

OK, thanks. We should wait for one of our TV-experts to weigh in.

Would anyone else mind weighing in on on this?

Patience, someone will respond eventually. By bumping a topic too soon if may be some extra weeks until you get a reply. We recommend bumping after 2 months, but usually someone responds sooner than that.

Sorry for the wait on a response. I looked at HBO's upcoming schedule a few weeks ago and I remember that the first episode of The New Pope was listed as S01E01 -- of course, now that I want to double check that, for some reason I can't seem to click through any of their schedule page.

That's indeed how it's listed.

Barring any changes between now and when The New Pope premieres, I think this page can stay and I'm marking The Young Pope as ended.

Okay, thanks. Now as someone who uses apps like Trakt which incorporate data from both TMDB and TVDB, I wish the latter would get on this page.
P.S. I'm looking at the Deutschland 83/86 TMDB page, called simply Deutschland, and wondering the same thing. Amazon lists the two completed series separately, with each's page having a Season 1 subheading. IMDB the same, etc. There's a third series, Deutschland 89, coming in the first half of 2020 btw.

Yup: https://i.imgur.com/95wfrhP.png
Amazon does not (or at least didn't) list them as two separate series. The second season was released as S2 of "Deutschland".

Well at the very least they are now. Each's show's episodes are called their respective Season 1 episodes, and there are no season drop-down menus (as is normal for shows with multiple seasons) to be found.
EDIT: It looks like Amazon treats it differently in the U.S. and Germany Prime apps. I was looking at the U.S. one. On Amazon Germany they list the two together, as two seasons under the Deutschland header. Ugh.
