Der er oprør i Amagergade på Christianshavn. Der går rygter om, at gaden skal rives ned for at give plads for et stort elegant Christianhavnscenter med et "Hilarious Holyday" Hotel som et prangende midtpunkt. Den pengegriske, kyniske byggematador Hallandsen (Poul Bundgaard), er med amerikansk kapital i ryggen ved at opkøbe alle ejendommene, for at overtage hele kvarteret. Det eneste der mangler er boligministerens godkendelse. Han har allerede opkøbt det meste af kvarteret. Han mangler kun Amagergade 7 og 9, som ejes af den gamle Fru Lorentzen. Hun er meget syg, så Hallandsen venter kun på, at hun afgår ved døden. Hallandsen har dog gjort regning uden vært. Nationalmuseet er kommet undervejs med, at netop i disse to numre er bevaringsværdige, og sender kunsthistorikeren Alfred Krabbe (Bjørn Watt Boolsen) ud for at undersøge sagen. Han arbejder nu på at husene i Amagergade fredes. Mens alt dette står på, sker der store og små begivenheder hos familierne i Huset.
