Seriousl;y though, I can never come up with a list that satisfies me. I'm a big fan of Season 6, for example, and I didn't really like Season 4 when it aired, but watching on DVD, I kind of like Season 4, you know? When S7 was originally on, I did't care for it much, but watching it on DVD, I think it's really, really strong. I actually got into a big debate about Buffy's character in S7. People are so hard on her!
And, of course, every time I do a re-watch, things change. Hey! There's an idea, a re-watch! Hmm, that's good thinking. Maybe I'll post my deep and profound thoughts on this board to try to jumpstart things as I watch. You know, things like "OMG they're all so young!!!" and "I'm pretty sure Giles was concussed for 7 years straight."
Anyway, right now, I'd probably rank them:
6
7
3
2/4
1
5
But I'm not at all happy with that list. Not even a little bit.
While I like some episodes in seasons 6 and 7, I wasn't a big fan of either season. I tend not to watch much from either of them whenever I do go back to watch the show.
This is my all time favorite show, I've watched it many times all the way through over the years, and I find that my favorite to least favorite seasons change around. As of right now, I would have to say it's the following:
2
3
5
6
4
7
1
This is a perfect example: Right now, I have season 4 ranked as 5th best, but there have been plenty of times where season 4 was my favorite. I would likely have to attribute this to how much I am connecting with a particular season due to whatever is going on in my personal life.
I also want to make clear that in my opinion, there is no bad season of BTVS. I love them all.
5 - hits all the extremes of humor and pathos. Was a big fan of Spike discovering he's in love, the brief but emotionally powerful return of Faith, the nearly unbeatable Big Bad.
3 - Extremely well-conceived and written, all episodes add to the story arc or theme. Charismatic villain in the Mayor. Touching finale that ends up on an up note.
4 - liked it more than many do...unlike many, Riley to me was a nice change of pace after Mopeyface. Was never a fan of Buffy/Angel, and that dragged interminably in S3. I liked the College dynamic, and even Frankenvillain was okay.
1 - short, frothy, to the point, and ultimately winning. Harder to rewatch for its goofiness.
2 & 6 - it gets difficult here. 6 was weak but can't of daring for a TV fantasy to cast real life itself as the Big Bad. Had plenty of moments that worked for me, was on the whole more interesting than 2. 2 had too many campy standalones...but then when the story arc of 2 kicks in you can't look away.
7 - painful al the way around. Ill-conceived, characters often unrecognizable.
New order after rewatch
S3 = Amazing series so many great episodes
S2 = Some great ones like ms calender dying, a couple of bad ones
S6 = Love the dark tones and dark Willow&Buffy resurrection
S5 = Glory was great&Joyce dying but dawn is beyond irritating
S4 = Had some great episodes hated the army stuff & Riley
S1 = Mixed some good some bad
S7 = Weak final season some good episodes
