Tahiti, 1891. Der französische Künstler Paul Gauguin hat sich in sein selbsterwähltes Exil nach Französisch-Polynesien zurückgezogen. Er lässt sich vom Dschungel verschlucken, trotzt Einsamkeit, Hunger und Krankheit. Während seinen Erkundungstouren über die Insel trifft er auf die junge Eingeborene Tehura, die seine Muse und auch Modell seiner bekanntesten Gemälde werden wird. Als freier Mann in der Wildnis – fernab der Politik und Regeln eines zivilisierten Europas, entwickelt er einen neuen Stil des Malens. Er nannte sich selbst einen „Wilden" und war zeitlebens ein Suchender nach dem Wesen der Dinge und den Mysterien der Welt. Der Maler Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) war einer der wichtigsten Wegbereiter des Expressionismus. Seine Südseebilder zeugen noch heute von seiner Sehnsucht nach dem Paradies, das er in der Exotik Tahitis gefunden zu haben glaubte. In dem bildgewaltigen Biopic GAUGUIN entführt Vincent Cassel die Zuschauer in diese für Gauguin so faszinierende Welt der Südsee.

Jahr für Jahr treten Tausende von Zackenbarschen eine lange Reise zu den Gewässern südlich des Atolls Fakarava an, das zu Französisch-Polynesien gehört. Die großen Fische versammeln sich dort und warten auf den Vollmond, um sich alle auf einmal in einer gigantischen Orgie zu paaren. ... (Den daraus entstehenden...) Fragen wollte das Team des Meeresbiologen und Fotografen Laurent Ballesta ... beantworten. 40 Tage lang tauchten die Wissenschaftler und Filmleute Tag und Nacht, um die riesige Zackenbarschversammlung zu beobachten. Sie wurden Zeugen extrem schneller Bewegungen und gewaltgeladener Verhaltensweisen, die sie dank Spezialkameras im Detail festhalten und im Zeitraffer anschaulich machen konnten. Erstmals gelang ihnen dank dieser Methode die genaue Schätzung der Anzahl der Zackenbarsche (18.000) und Haie (700, die höchste Haidichte der Welt!). Laurent Ballesta erfüllte sich zudem einen alten Traum: einen Rekordtauchgang von 24 Stunden! (Text: arte)
