Héloise domluvenému manželství vzdoruje tím, že se odmítá nechat portrétovat, Marianne proto hraje roli najaté společnice a maluje svůj objekt po večerech zpaměti. Mezi oběma dívkami postupně roste vzájemná přitažlivost umocněná blížícím se koncem svobody.
