April 1954. Het 12-jarige schoolmeisje Sadako denkt dat haar grootste probleem is dat ze het stokje niet kan doorgeven tijdens estafettewedstrijden. Maar net als haar team begint te winnen, wordt ze gemakkelijker moe. Ze wordt teruggestuurd naar het American Base Victory Hospital, waar de diagnose lymfatische leukemie is. En ze heeft nog niet meer dan een jaar te leven. Haar ouders zijn het met de dokter eens dat het Sadako niet verteld mag worden, maar zal ze er toch achter komen?

April 1954. 12 year old schoolgirl Sadako thinks her main problem is being unable to pass the baton in relay races. But just as her team starts winning, she starts getting tired more easily. She is sent back to the American Base Victory Hospital, where the diagnosis is lymphatic leukemia. And she has no more than a year left to live. Her parents agree with the doctor that Sadako should not be told, but will she find out anyway ?
